The  Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons enter their Week 2 matchup desperate to avoid the difficulty that comes from starting the NFL season 0-2.

The Cowboys’ win total is projected at 9.5 and starting 0-2 is not what owner Jerry Jones has in mind as he continues working on a long-term contract with quarterback Dak Prescott.

The Prescott-led Cowboys, who lost 20-17 to the Rams in Week 1, are 4.5-point favorites against Atlanta in the Falcons vs Cowboys odds.

Atlanta Falcons vs Dallas Cowboys Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total
Atlanta Falcons +175 +4.5 (-108) O 53.5 (-110)
Dallas Cowboys -200 -4.5 (-113) U 53.5 (-110)

The Falcons couldn’t stop quarterback Russell Wilson last week, and they are placing plenty of emphasis this week on limiting the impact of Prescott.

Falcons  Shorthanded Against Cowboys

Starting left tackle Jake Matthews is bothered by a knee injury, although he did practice in a limited capacity Thursday and Friday.

The Falcons believe their offensive line will be much improved this season, and Matthews is an integral part of their improvements. Officially, he’s listed as questionable. Even if he plays, he might not be as effective as he would normally be.

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield is already listed as out for the game. He also missed Week 1.

Cowboys Could be Without Two Starters

Starting left tackle Tyron Smith’s status will be a game-time decision on Sunday, which is an alarming turn of events for the Cowboys. Initially, the Cowboys believed his neck injury wasn’t a significant problem.

The Cowboys are only 7-5 when Smith is out, including a 27-7 loss to the Falcons in 2017. Smith has missed three games in each of the past four seasons.

Cornerback Anthony Brown is also questionable.  The Cowboys already have Leighton Vander Esch (collarbone), Sean Lee (sports hernia), and Blake Jarwin (ACL) on injured reserve

Falcons’ Offense Can Be Dangerous

Julio Jones needs just three receptions to become the Falcons’ all-time leading pass catcher. He’s just one concern the Cowboys’ defense will have to worry about.

While the Falcons weren’t competitive against the Seahawks, they showed they have the skill to be an effective offensive team. The Cowboys probably saw on video this week that they need to respect the Atlanta offense.

The Falcons like to run the football, and they averaged 4.2 yards per carry on first and second down. Todd Gurley can still be a force in the ground game as he rushed for 56 yards and one score on just 14 carries.

With a team record on the line, look for Jones to have an inspired game. The Falcons will try to get him matched up against the Dallas’ undersized secondary members.

Atlanta’s offensive line does need some improvement, and quarterback Matt Ryan isn’t slick when it comes to avoiding the rush. The Cowboys hope to take advantage of those deficiencies.

Cowboys’ Offense Should Rule in Week 2

The Falcons gave up 38 points in the first week, and quarterback Russell Wilson picked apart the secondary for 322 yards and four touchdowns. Look for Prescott to also have a big day through the air. The Falcons’ defense seems to have too many holes to stop strong offensive teams.

Pick: Dallas Cowboys -4.5 (-113)
