  • The Super Bowl odds of the Green Bay Packers have shortened to +1400 from +1600 following their 37-30 Sunday night win over the New Orleans Saints to improve to 3-0
  • Green Bay’s betting line was at +3533 just prior to the start of the NFL season

It would be wrong to suggest that the Pack is back, because in reality the Green Bay Packers never went away. The Packers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2020 NFC Championship Game. This season, Green Bay is off to a 3-0 start.

In the eyes of the oddsmakers, though, the consensus was that the Pack would be packing it in as a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season.

That hasn’t been the case.

Following a 37-30 Sunday Night Football victory over the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay’s Super Bowl odds have improved from +1600 to +1400.

The Packers moved from the sixth to the fourth betting choice in the span of a week.

The Doubting of Green Bay

Green Bay’s Super Bowl odds were at +3533 just prior to the kickoff of the NFL regular season on Sept. 3rd. The Minnesota Vikings were favored to win the NFC North over the defending champion Packers.

This seed of doubt was likely rooted in a couple of factors. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is approaching his 37th birthday. His 2019 passer rating of 95.4 in 2019 was his lowest in five seasons.

The concern was no doubt accentuated when Green Bay spent its first draft pick on Utah State QB Jordan Love. After Devin Funchess opted out of the season, there was worry that the Pack were shy at receiver. But the fears have proven to be unfounded.

Sunday, even without leading receiver Davante Adams (hamstring), the Packers rolled.

Allen Lazard snared six passes for 146 yards and a TD. A three-headed monster at tight end trio of Marcedes Lewis, Jace Sternberger and Robert Tonyan caught nine balls for 104 yards and two TDs.

Rodgers owns a 121.9 passer rating and his QBR of 121.4 leads the NFL. He’s thrown for nine touchdowns and hasn’t been picked off.  Green Bay’s 1.9% sack percentage allowed is also lowest in the league.

Packers Posting Quality Wins

Green Bay has recorded an NFL-high 122 points – 11 points better than any other team – while facing a pair of 2019 playoff teams during the first three games of the season.

The Packers left no doubt as to who rules over the NFC North in Week 1. They went up to Minnesota and whacked the Vikings 43-34. They dropped 37 on the Saints – the preseason NFC favorites – right in New Orleans.

Green Bay, the Seattle Seahawks and the Packs’ NFC North rivals the Chicago Bears are the NFC’s only remaining 3-0 teams. But scratch below the surface and the Bears look to be more smoke and mirrors than legitimate contenders.

Chicago’s three wins were against the Detroit Lions, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons, who are a combined 1-8. The Bears face a QB controversy. Nick Foles came off the bench to relieve Mitch Trubisky and engineer a comeback win against Atlanta.

Bears coach Matt Nagy won’t name his Week 4 starter. Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur faces no such debate.

A Notch Below

The offense is sensational. The Packers are averaging 40.7 points and 459.7 yards per game.

The Green Bay defense is surrendering a lot of points (28.3 points per game), though. The Packers are 19th in the NFL at stopping the pass (247 yards per game) and 15th at halting the run (115 YPG). They’ve allowed a whopping 5.5 yards per carry. That’s 29th in the NFL.

As good as it’s been for the Packers, the sense is that a similar fate awaits them in the final analysis. The Pack could be headed for another loss to an NFC West team in the NFC Championship Game.

The Seahawks look to be the squad to beat in the NFC. Seattle QB Russell Wilson is a man on a mission.

If you’re planning to bet an NFC team to win the Super Bowl, Seattle is the choice.
