Bridgewater started one game a year ago, but this stretch in 2019 has been his first chance to start multiple games since the 2015 season in Minnesota. So far, he’s made the most of it.
Breakout Against the Bucs
Against Tampa Bay on Sunday, Bridgewater had his best game in years. He completed a tremendous 76.5% of his throws, and racked up 314 yards and four touchdowns.
Those completions weren’t just check downs. On several occasions, Bridgewater delivered accurate strikes downfield to pick up big chunks of yardage. He hadn’t surpassed 200 yards in his first two starts, but on Sunday, Sean Payton let Bridgewater loose, and the quarterback delivered.
Bridgewater Getting Better
It isn’t just the one performance against the Buccaneers that has his stock rising. In all three of his starts so far, Bridgewater has seen his numbers improve. He hasn’t completed fewer than 70% of his throws in any game, and has finished with a passer rating above 100 in two of his three starts.

Opponent | Completion Percentage | Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions | Passer Rating |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Seahawks | 70.4% | 177 | 2 | 0 | 112.7 |
Cowboys | 76.7% | 193 | 0 | 1 | 78.9 |
Buccaneers | 76.5% | 314 | 4 | 1 | 131.2 |
There’s no doubt that Payton has helped make things easier for Bridgewater, but at the end of the day, the quarterback has gone out and gotten the job done. Every week, Payton has opened up more of the playbook, and on Sunday, Bridgewater showed that he doesn’t need to be coached with kid gloves.
What Teams Might be in the Market for a QB?
This is where the excitement is dampened a bit for Bridgewater backers. As well as he’s played, the league as a whole is healthier at quarterback than it has been in a long time. Most NFL teams have either an established franchise leader or a young passer who they haven’t reached a final judgement on. Teams not in those categories will likely be going to the draft for a new quarterback.
The Dolphins and Bengals are two potential landing spots, but it’s far more likely that with high draft picks they’ll go to Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert, respectively.
The Broncos are one team that may be in the market for a new passer. Joe Flacco has been average this year, and Denver may decide to get a quarterback in free agency while they use the draft to continue to overhaul the roster.
The options seem limited, but right now, Bridgewater is doing the best he can to convince teams that he’s made it all the way back.
