Brown Out In Cleveland

When a point spread is shifting by six points from its opening line and it doesn’t even come close to producing the biggest spread move of the week, you know it’s been a wild one. The Philadelphia Eagles jumped from the 3.5-point chalk to 9.5-point favorites over the Washington Football Team.

However, the Week 15 winner is not only involving significant spread movement, it’s including a shift in the betting favorite. The Cleveland Browns were the 5.5-point home choice over the Las Vegas Raiders in the opening line. Since then, news has broken that both Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, his backup Case Keenum and head coach Kevin Stefanski have entered COVID protocol.

In total, 17 Cleveland players are expected to be out due to COVID-19. That’s causing a complete swing in the point spread. Currently, the Raiders are the 3.5-point pick. That’s a nine-point swing.

A Pair Of Fives

The NFL Week 15 line movement is featuring five-point adjustments in a pair of total lines. One is on the rise. The other is decreasing.

There appears to be a renewal of faith in the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense. KC touched up the Raiders for 48 points last week but is this misplaced faith? Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has only thrown two TD passes in his last three games. KC had scored 22 points or less in four of the previous five games.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers took the field Thursday with a total of 53.5 points. That was up from the opening line of 48.5 points.

The mess in Cleveland is causing significant subtraction in the total on that game. Considering that third-string QB Nick Mullen is the anticipated starter for the Browns, that’s not at all surprising. The total opened at 42 points. It’s down to 37 points.

Titan Up That Tennessee Spread

The line between the visiting Tennessee Titans and the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers was off the board when the Week 15 odds first opened. It’s currently at Tennessee -1, making it the smallest spread of Week 15.

It’s understandable why oddsmakers are displaying reluctance regarding this game. The Steelers have lost three of four games. They are banged up on both sides of the ball. Edge rusher and NFL sack leader TJ Watt is an uncertain starter.

QB Ben Roethlisberger is taking a savage beating behind a makeshift offensive line.

At the same time, the Titans are without their two best offensive performers in wide receiver AJ Brown and two-time NFL rushing champion Derrick Henry.

Spreading Out Some Big Numbers

With just four weeks to go in the regular season, there are some massive point spread numbers on Week 15 games. Both the Buffalo Bills (Carolina Panthers) and Dallas Cowboys (New York Giants) are 10.5-point favorites.

Tampa Bay is an 11-point choice over New Orleans. However, the largest spread margin of the week is going to a visiting team. The Arizona Cardinals are -13 at the Detroit Lions .

On the surface, seeing the 10-3 Cardinals so heavily favored over the 1-11-1 Lions isn’t all that surprising. What might come as a surprise is that these are two of the best against the spread teams in the NFL this season. Arizona is 9-4 ATS, while Detroit is 8-5.

This will be the fifth time that the Lions are double-digit underdogs. Detroit is 2-2 ATS in that scenario and 2-0 ATS at home.

The Big Short

The Raiders gave up 48 point in losing to the Chiefs last week. On the other hand, the Browns have scored 14.3 points per game over the past three.

They’ll be missing at least 17 players this weekend and starting their third-string QB. Add to that a weather forecast calling for wind, sleet and sub-40 degree temperatures.

Any wonder that this game is showing the lowest total (37 points) for Week 15?

Chiefs Of Big Numbers

The Chiefs and Chargers are accounting for the largest total of Week 15. They kicked off with the over/under set at 53.5 points. It’s the 11th time in 14 games this season the the total on KC’s game exceeded 50 points.

Among the weekend’s remaining games, the Cardinals and Lions are combining for the next-highest total at 47 points. The total has gone over in each of Arizona’s last six visits to Detroit, so it’s a bit odd that the line has shortened from its opening number of 47.5 points.
