  • Sportsbooks have set point totals for all 31 NHL teams
  • These are the five teams who are the best bets to go over their established total
  • The Arizona Coyotes, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks are the choices

Coaches and players of NHL teams are always talking about staying with the process and getting over the hump.

With the 2019-20 season about to get underway Wednesday, optimism abounds on all 31 NHL fronts. Every team thinks that this will be their year.

Most will be incorrect in that assumption but some will exceed expectations.

Sportsbooks established point total numbers for all of the NHL’s teams. These are the teams who are the best bets to go over their point projections during the upcoming season.

Arizona Coyotes Regular Season NHL Point Total

Total Points Over Odds Under Odds
89.5 -110 -110

*Odds taken 10/02/19

The Coyotes made a quantum leap up the standings ladder last season. Arizona went from 70 points and 15th in the West to 86 and 9th overall in the conference. Adding four more points to that total doesn’t seem like a tall order.

Scoring was Arizona’s issue last season. The Coyotes averaged just 2.55 goals per game (28th in the NHL) and posted a horrible 8.3 shooting percentage (29th overall).

Adding six-time 30-goal scoring Phil Kessel should boost the offense enough to bump Arizona over.

Pick: Arizona Coyotes over 89.5 points (-110)

Chicago Blackhawks Regular Season NHL Point Total

Total Points Over Odds Under Odds
90.5 -115 -105

Last season was dreadful for the Blackhawks. They missed the playoffs for the second straight season and dismissed longtime coach Joel Quenneville, who won them three Stanley Cups between 2010-15.

Chicago was eighth in goals scored last season but allowed the second-most goals in the NHL.

To rectify this situation, the Blackhawks signed free agent goalie Robin Lehner, a Vezina Trophy finalist, and acquired defensemen Calvin De Haan and Olli Maatta in separate trades.

Andrew Shaw and Zack Smith will bolster Chicago’s bottom six forwards. And the Blackhawks still have Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and 40-goal scorer Alex DeBrincat.

Pick: Chicago Blackhawks over 90.5 points (-115)

Florida Panthers Regular Season NHL Point Total

Total Points Over Odds Under Odds
96.5 -110 -110

Moving three-time Cup winner Quenneville, second on the all-time NHL wins list with 890, in behind the bench was one major coup for the Panthers. Putting two-time Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky between the posts was another. He’ll repair Florida’s .891 save percentage that was 30th in the league.

Just two seasons ago, the Panthers put up 96 points. In 2015-16, they were first in the Atlantic Division with 103 points.

Florida’s power play was #2 in the NHL last year in goals (72) and percentage (26.8). The Panthers were the only team in the top 10 of this category that didn’t make the playoffs. Florida suited up three 30-goal scorers (Aleksandr Barkov, Mike Hoffman, Jonathan Huberdeau) and two others who netted at least 20.

Pick: Florida Panthers over 96.5 points (-110)

New Jersey Devils Regular Season NHL Point Total

Total Points Over Odds Under Odds
90.5 -110 -110

The defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues missed the playoffs in 2017-18. The Devils missed the playoffs last season. That’s not the only similarity between the two teams.

The Blues swapped for a key piece of their puzzle in the summer of 2018, adding Selke and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Ryan O’Reilly. The Devils swapped this past summer for a key piece of their puzzle, acquiring a Norris Triphy-winning defenseman in PK Subban.

While he has almost as many detractors as his does backers, there can be no question that teams get a PK bump from Subban’s arrival. In 2010-11, his first full season in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens jumped from 88 to 96 points with Subban in the lineup on a nightly basis.

During his inaugural season in Nashville, the Predators went to the Stanley Cup final for the first time in franchise history.

The Devils have the 2017-18 Hart Trophy winner in Taylor Hall and two of the last three first overall draft picks in forwards Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes. They also added forwards Wayne Simmonds and Nikita Gusev during the summer.

If Cory Schneider and MacKenzie Blackwood give them solid goaltending, the Devils could have quite the season.

Pick: New Jersey Devils over 90.5 points (-110)

Vancouver Canucks Regular Season NHL Point Total

Total Points Over Odds Under Odds
86.5 -125 +105

The Canucks have climbed the points ladder two seasons in a row, going from 69 to 73 to 81. That’s an average increase of six points, which would put Vancouver at 87 this season.

The Canucks flirted with the playoff bubble last season until a 4-7-3 February took the wind out of their sails.

This is a team with a great future. Calder Trophy winner Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Bo Horvat, Quinn Hughes and Thatcher Demko are all 24 or younger.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks over 86.5 points (-110)
