Blackwood’s Negative Impact on Tuesday NHL Odds

While the New Jersey Devils have managed to drag their maligned penalty kill to a respectable 15th in the league. It is now even-strength goaltending that has become a dire issue for New Jersey. Mackenzie Blackwood heads a group that has just a .872 save percentage over the last ten games. Since a December 8th shutout versus Philadelphia, New Jersey’s starter has given up three or more goals six straight times.

Blackwood is suspected of having a bum heel still. His form has been as bad as the Devils defense (3.39 goals per game allowed). It is hard to imagine the 25-year-old was a fringe contender in the Vezina Trophy odds before COVID hit last season. Blackwood’s poor play of late is the main reason why New Jersey is a big underdog in Tuesday’s NHL odds for Bruins vs Devils.

Bruins NHL Odds Dip From COVID Pause

During the 2 1/2 months, there has been a dip in the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup odds. This is a team that started the season at around +1200 to win the Stanley Cup. Boston now is riding closer to +2000 at DraftKings and worse elsewhere. Their 5-3-2 mark over the past ten games has not eased bettors’ concerns much. The lack of play (16 days off) affected Boston on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres. They won in overtime.

Boston did look better in Detroit on Sunday winning convincingly 5-1. Jeremy Swayman stopped 23 of 24 shots in the win as the Bruins looked more like themselves.

It seems as if all the season-long problems evaporated over the weekend for Boston. The scoring, even the secondary scoring, was prominent. Boston played better and better defensively as the Buffalo game went along. Also, the goaltenders were pretty sharp in net.

The two wins put Boston right back in the playoff picture. Yes, it’s early but still.

Devils vs Bruins Prediction & Pick

The Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils both have a little momentum heading into Tuesday night, but Boston looks like the more complete team. They are also fairly healthy. New Jersey has several injuries and a bit of concern with Dougie Hamilton, who took a puck to the face against Washington on Sunday.

For the Devils, they need Hamilton in the lineup. Yes, Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes have been incredible since the extended break but Boston is a step up in competition.

As for the Bruins, the time off may have been just what they needed most. If David Pastrnak gets going, then look out!

Take the Bruins puckline and the over as they are currently listed near plus-money at Barstool Sportsbook in the Devils vs Bruins odds.

Pick: Bruins -1.5 (-104), Over 5.5 (-107)
