As they arrive in Winnipeg to face the Jets on Sunday, the New York Islanders’ road trip from hell is becoming a much more enjoyable experience.

The Isles opened with back-to-back lopsided setbacks. Since then, they’ve grabbed a point in six successive games.

Likewise, the Jets, who beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1, have secured points in eight successive games following an 0-2 start.

Oddsmakers have established the Jets as slight -115 favorites over the visiting Islanders in the NHL odds. Winnipeg is a perfect 4-0 at home this season.

Islanders vs Jets Injury Report

Jets defenseman Dylan Samberg is out with a high ankle sprain. Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck is sidelined by an illness. However, the former Vezina Trophy winner has tested negative for COVID-19.

The Islanders report no injuries.

Islanders’ Sorokin Carrying The Load

It figures to be a battle of the backups. However, neither Ilya Sorokin of the Isles or Eric Comrie of the Jets are playing like they deserve to be #2 on the depth chart.

Sorokin has started all eight games this season while veteran Semyon Varlamov was sidelined by an undisclosed injury. Sorokin has posted a pair of shutouts. Varlamov is back in the lineup but isn’t expected to play Friday.

Islanders vs Jets Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Islanders Ilya Sorokin 4-2-2 .933 2.23
Jets Eric Comrie 3-0-0 .922 1.94

With Hellebuyck out, Eric Comrie was making his third start in four games on Friday against Chicago. He is 3-0 on the season.

Recalled from the AHL Manitoba Moose, Mikhail Berdin is serving as Comrie’s understudy.

Islanders vs Jets Pick

Winnipeg is 31st in the NHL with a dreadful 62.5% success rate on the penalty. Luckily for them, the Isles are only 22nd in the league on the power play (17.4%). The Jets’ power play rates third overall in the NHL, scoring at a 28.6% clip.

Winnipeg’s 6-2-2 start is the best posted by the club since the team relocated from Atlanta.

The Jets will be playing the second game of back to backs for the first time during the 2021-22 campaign. Last season, they were quite successful in this scenario. Winnipeg was 5-2 overall in the second game in as many nights. When both games were at home, as is the case here, they were 3-1.

The Islanders have won three in a row over the Jets. They’re even more impressive at Winnipeg. The Isles have emerged the winners in seven of their last eight visits to the Manitoba capital.

Pick: New York Islanders (-105).
