Perfect Storm

The Hurricanes are controlling the game with or without possession of the puck. They have allowed two goals or fewer in three of their four wins. At the same time, Carolina has scored at least four goals in three of four games.

The team’s third line of Jordan Staal, Nino Niederreiter and Jesper Fast is proving to be the epitome of what makes the Hurricanes tick. Designated as Carolina’s shutdown line, they draw the assignment of checking the opponent’s top forward unit.

All three players in that group – Fast (55.2), Staal (54.2) and Niederreiter (53.5) show positive Corsi ratings, an indication that they’re driving possession. That trio is producing at least one goal in every game thus far as well.

It truly is proving to be a team effort for the Canes. Forward Andrei Svechnikov is Carolina’s leading scorer (4-3-7). He’s 17th overall in the NHL. However, the Hurricanes suit up five players with multiple goals and nine with multiple assists.

Leafs Are Falling

Skating against a Penguins club that was missing Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Jeff Carter and Bryan Rust, Toronto came up six goals shy of victory on Saturday.

The Leafs have given up the first goal in five of six games this season. At 2-3-1, it’s the first time they’ve ever been a below-.500 club under current coach Sheldon Keefe.

Revenge Of Freddie?

Some viewers of a documentary about last season’s Leafs felt that goalie Frederik Andersen was being made out as the scapegoat for the team’s failures in recent years when they were among the favorites in the NHL playoff odds. Enduring an injury-riddled campaign, he posted career worsts in GAA (2.96) and save percentage (.895).

Hurricanes vs Maple Leafs Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Carolina Frederik Andersen 4-0-0 .944 1.75
Toronto Jack Campbell 2-1-1 .916 2.22

Andersen signed as a free agent with Carolina. So far this season, he’s rating in the top 10 in the NHL in GAA (1.75) and save percentage (.944). Of course, the last time these two teams met, it was emergency backup David Ayres – the Leafs’ backup Zamboni driver – who was forced into action for the Canes. Ayres beat Toronto 6-3.

Hurricanes vs Maple Leafs Pick

On the surface, Carolina looks to offer value as an upset pick in the NHL betting lines. However, when an NHL team gets embarrassed as the Leafs were on Saturday, they generally bounce back with a much better effort.

This game is a litmus test of whether the Maple Leafs have any character at all.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs (-105).
