Avs, Golden Knights Are Western Titans

The Golden Knights and Avalanche are co-favored to win the Stanley Cup two weeks into the season. Colorado was the sole betting favorite at +650 heading into opening night, but an underwhelming start has led oddsmakers to lengthen their odds to +700. The Avs are 4-3-0 to begin the year, but they are trending in the right direction after a huge 7-3 victory over San Jose on Tuesday.

While Colorado has seen their odds lengthen, Vegas’ odds have trended in the opposite direction. The Golden Knights have gone from +800 to +700 over the past two weeks after an impressive 5-1-1 start. Even without fans in attendance, the Golden Knights continue to excel at T-Mobile arena, failing to record a regulation loss on home ice thus far.

While both these teams are juggernauts, the Avalanche offer the most upside. They were many experts preseason pick to win the Cup, and a bit of a slow start isn’t reason to push the panic button. Colorado leads the division with a plus-7 goal differential and their 55.78 CF% is tops in the conference. It’s only a matter of time before this team plays to its full potential, and Tuesday’s game hinted that it may come sooner rather than later.

Habs Are Huge Risers

While most of the movement in the updated Stanley Cup odds has been fairly minor, there is one team that is gaining some serious traction. The Habs have gone from +2600 to +1700 over the last two weeks after a remarkable 4-0-2 start. This is even more noteworthy when you consider Montreal opened at +5000 to win it all.

The Canadiens are looking like the real deal this season and should challenge the Maple Leafs for the North Division title. Montreal’s offseason additions of Tyler Toffoli, Josh Anderson, Corey Perry, Joel Edmundson and Jake Allen are paying major dividends and making them a very well-balanced team. The Habs currently lead the division with a plus-11 goal differential and 54.71 CF%.

Whether or not you should get in on Montreal now depends on what you think of Toronto. This unique realignment means that only one team from each division will make it to the playoff semi-finals. The Leafs look excellent in the early goings of the season and have better Cup odds than Montreal. If you think it will be yet another year of Toronto choking on the big stage, there’s value to be had with the Habs.

Where’s the Best Value?

Aside from Colorado and Montreal both offering value, there are a few other teams to be keeping an eye on. The Dallas Stars are sitting at +2400 after starting the season with a perfect 3-0-0 record. The Stars got off to a late start due to COVID-19, but they’re making some noise after scoring a whopping nine power-play goals and allowing just three goals in their opening three contests.

The main reason to consider a longshot wager on Dallas is because their odds are only going to improve. They’ve been without captain Jamie Benn (day-to-day) and are expected to get forward Tyler Seguin and goalie Ben Bishop back from injury in April. This team already proved with their run to the Stanley Cup Final last year they have the talent to be considered a serious contender.

In the stacked East Division, the Capitals are an intriguing team to monitor. They’ve climbed to the top of the standings despite losing several key players, including Alex Ovechkin, for four games due COVID protocols. The x-factor here is goaltending, as the Caps are giving up an average of three goals per game. 25-year-old Vitek Vanecek is impressing in the early goings, so if he maintains this level of plays and takes the reigns in the crease, the Caps are worth looking at.
