Heavy Rain Delays Daytona 500

We only made it through 20 laps of the Daytona 500 on Sunday before heavy rains pounded the track. As a result, we’ll be watching on Monday afternoon for the restart at 4pm ET to see who’ll be the eventual champion of the Great American Race.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started the race in the pole position and has maintained his lead through 20 laps. He was at 20-1 to win the race beforehand but now his odds are down to 16-1. Joey Logano is currently in second place and he’s the current favorite to win the Daytona 500 at 8-1. He was at 10-1 to win the race beforehand.

We’ve seen so little of the race, so it’s hard to gauge who is a good bet right now but it is easier to start with who isn’t. Kyle Busch is always a risky bet at the Daytona 500 and he’s currently 32nd. His odds are still +1000 but I’ll pass. He did fall back because of a coordinated Toyota team strategy, though.

Realistically, though, a lot can still change at this race – even drivers coming from the back to win it – because we really haven’t seen that much action yet. There will probably be crashes and accidents over the next 180 laps and the drivers that do the best at avoiding the wrecks will be in the best shape.

What’s the Best Bet?

I liked Denny Hamlin before the race but he failed pre-race inspection multiple times and had to start at the back of the pack. That’s not so bad considering the rest of his Toyota team planned to drop back anyways. I’ll still hold my faith in him at +1000, even though he’s currently in 35th.

I’ll stick with him as my outright pick but I would consider Clint Bowyer – his Toyota teammate – for a Top 10 prop too. Bowyer did great avoiding the mess at the Busch Clash, being just one of six drivers to do so. He has four Top 10’s at Daytona since 2015, so I’ll bank on one more in Monday’s race too.
