AC Milan is a clear -200 moneyline favorite. A $100 bet on the hosts would bring you a return of $150. Salzburg, if they can pull off the upset, offers huge value at +500. $100 would result in a profit of $500.

These two sides played to a 1-1 draw on Matchday 1 in Austria in a rather exciting attacking affair, with a total of 30 shots combined.

Can Milan Finally Move On?

It’s been eight years since Milan last advanced to the UCL knockout stages, doing so in 2014 when they ultimately lost to Atletico in the last 16. But last season, the Rossoneri had a clear-cut chance to move on in Group B until Atleti, coincidentally enough, found a crucial result on the last matchday and went through instead, while the Serie A side failed to produce the goods when it mattered.

This time around, it’s a similar situation. If Stefano Pioli’s men win or draw here, they’re in the Round of 16. A loss, however, would result in elimination and demotion to Europa. They do come into this match in respectable form though, winning three games in a row before a 2-1 defeat at Torino on Sunday. Last Tuesday, Milan ran out as 4-0 winners against Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb, putting their attacking prowess on full display.

The Red and Blacks have never lost to Salzburg in three meetings, winning twice and drawing back in September. That’s certainly a positive sign ahead of such a crucial game.

Salzburg Looking to Pull Off the Unthinkable

The Austrian giants aren’t exactly a regular contender in Europe’s most prized competition. But, they did make it to the Round of 16 in 2021-22 after finishing in second place in Group G behind Sevilla, eventually tasting defeat against Bayern Munich, 8-2 on aggregate.

Despite the embarrassing performance against one of the continent’s elite, Salzburg still has a chance to progress in 2022-23 after a respectable showing in Group E. Matthias Jaissle’s side beat Dinamo on matchday three, played to a few draws, and then finally lost their first game last week to Chelsea.

Salzburg enjoyed just 29% of the ball but did enjoy their fair share of chances, losing by one goal. Kai Havertz scored a winner for the Blues in the 64th minute. The visitors aren’t scoring a whole lot in the UCL but have conceded just five times. Hopefully, that’ll continue Wednesday.

AC Milan vs Salzburg Prediction

Milan and Salzburg are dealing with no shortage of absences but should be able to field strong starting XIs. It’s hard to look past history and that’s why I believe Milan will keep Salzburg at bay. But, they almost always concede at home in Europe in recent memory, which is why I’m liking the value of a draw with both teams finding the back of the net.

Pick: Draw (+340), Both Teams to Score (-130)
