Freiburg vs RB Leipzig Preview

In a repeat of last season’s final – won 4-2 by RB Leipzig on penalties after the game ended 1-1 – Freiburg will be hoping their good Bundesliga form will help take them one step further this season and see them lift the trophy for the first time.

The Breisgau-Brasilianer currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga and are currently on course to claim one of the four Champions League places, while improving on their sixth-place finish in 2021-22.

Freiburg Beat the Mighty Bayern

Freiburg’s route to the semifinal has not been a straightforward one with them needing penalty shootout wins to get through the first two rounds, followed by a more convincing 2-0 victory over Sandhusen in the round-of-16.

Where it got more interesting was in the quarterfinal where they came from behind in the Allianz Arena to sensationally beat Bayern Munich 2-1, thanks to a 95th-minute penalty from Lucas Holer.

When these two met earlier in the season in Leipzig, the home side won 3-1.

UCL Place Still in Reach of Leipzig

RB have struggled over the last couple of seasons to maintain their rivalry with the Bundesliga’s big two – Bayern and Borussia Dortmund – but they still are among the challenging pack and last season managed fourth place which brought with it a place in the Champions League.

This season has been a little bit more difficult for them – they are currently down in fifth – but are only two points behind Freiburg with four games left to play. Their chance of Champions League soccer is still there.

Impressive Win Over BVB

But for now, all their focus will be on the DFB-Pokal as they look to retain the trophy they won for the first time in 2021-22. Their route to the semifinal has been much more comfortable than Freiburg’s with four comfortable wins, which included an 8-0 thrashing of Teutonia Ottensen in the first round and an impressive 2-0 win over BVB in the quarterfinal.

Home advantage may favor Freiburg but this RB team has plenty of recent experience of big games like this.

DFB-Pokal Prediction

Freiburg’s heartbreak in last season’s final will still be fresh in their minds and they will use this as motivation for this semifinal.

While RB have the greater experience, these are two well-matched teams and so home advantage may ultimately be the deciding factor. While they are still in plus money, the value is with Freiburg.

Freiburg vs RB Leipzig Picks: Freiburg to win in 90 mins (+260) / Over 3.5 goals (+250)
