European qualifiers continue this week for the World Cup in Qatar next year and Wednesday brings a huge fixture for Iceland as they host Germany, who currently sit in top spot in Group J. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:45 PM EST. The Icelanders are coming off a gritty 2-2 draw with Euro 2020 debutants North Macedonia, while the Germans classed their way to a 6-0 thrashing of Armenia.

The last clash between these two sides saw Germany run out as 3-0 winners on Matchday 1.

Iceland Desperately Need a Positive Result

Arnar Viðarsson’s squad has been very poor in qualifying for Qatar 2022 and at this point, a victory would be the only acceptable result on Matchday 6. Iceland has just four points to show for through five games thus far, which puts them second-last in Group J above only Liechtenstein. The Icelanders are 1-1-3, with their only victory coming against the aforementioned in March.

However, Iceland’s draw with North Macedonia over the weekend was a positive sign. They were down by two goals from the 54th minute on, but Brynjar Bjarnason cut the lead in half before Real Madrid youngster Andri Gudjohnsen drew level late in the second half to salvage a point for his side.

Unfortunately, goals have been few and far between for Viðarsson’s men, netting just six times while conceding 10. Their recent run of form isn’t promising either, collecting just three victories in the previous 15 fixtures dating back to November of 2019.

In five meetings with Germany all-time, they’ve yet to win, scoring just once in the process. Given how their oppositions are playing right now as well, this will undoubtedly be a very tough clash for Iceland. Their squad is basically at full strength for Wednesday, with the exception of Johan Gudmundsson, who is nursing a small injury and is doubtful after missing the North Macedonia game.

Germany Flying High

Hansi Flick has taken control of the German National Team and enjoyed a rocking start, leading the side two convincing results in a row. Die Mannschaft beat Liechtenstein last week 2-0, then put six past Armenia on the weekend. Although both opponents weren’t the toughest, it was good to see Germany bagging some goals after a rather underwhelming showing at Euro 2020.

They were absolutely clinical on Sunday, with four different players finding the back of the net. Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry led the way in the final third with a brace, while Timo Werner also scored and supplied an assist. The Armenians were no match, with the Germans registering a total of 23 shots in the encounter at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart.

Through five matches in World Cup qualifying, Flick’s men have collected 12 points of a possible 15, with their only defeat coming to the Macedonians earlier this year on Matchday 3. Besides that, they’ve been pretty much flawless and will likely have absolutely no problem winning this group. In the process, the Germans have netted 13 times and allowed only two goals, which both came in the North Macedonia clash.

Chelsea starlet Kai Havertz missed out on Sunday due to injury and will probably be absent once again on Wednesday. Thomas Muller is also injured and will be unavailable against the Nordic nation. Nonetheless, Flick has no shortage of options for his starting XI, with lots of quality to choose from throughout the squad.

Iceland vs Germany Prediction

I have a very hard time believing Iceland has any chance at collecting the full three points here. They’re frankly just not the same team that made a historic run at Euro 2016. There’s not a lot of value in the moneyline for Germany, though. However, the visitors have been rock solid at the back and lethal in the final third. Therefore, a specific scoreline could be a worthy bet for Wednesday’s clash. Take the Germans to win by two goals while keeping another clean sheet on the road.

Pick: Germany 2-0 (+500)
