Week 13 of the 2021 MLS season takes place this weekend. Minnesota United and Seattle Sounders clash in one of the headline fixtures, with Minnesota priced at +105 to win the match. Seattle is off to an unbeaten start, and sits atop the Western Conference with eight wins and five draws to date.

Minnesota is currently in the final West playoff spot. They have just four wins from their first twelve matches this season, and lost to the Colorado Rapids last time out.

Seattle has won the last three matches against Minnesota, including a 4-0 thrashing back in April. They are still underdogs for this matchup, however, sitting at +235 to win the match.

Team News

With players in the Gold Cup and an array of injuries, Seattle are far from full strength. The two Roldan brothers are on international duty, while a torn meniscus has ruled Will Bruin out for several weeks. First choice goalkeeper Stefan Frei remains sidelined, too.

The absences have clearly contributed to the odds for this match. Minnesota are missing key men as well, though, with Dayne St. Clair called up by Canada and Ramon Abila suspended.

Being forced to make some changes could yet be a blessing in disguise for The Loons. Their performances have been up and down so far this season, and no player has scored more than twice. The talent gap has been closed thanks to Seattle’s absences. Minnesota have been fortunate with the timing of this matchup – they would be heavy underdogs if the Sounders were at full strength.

Sounders Defense Under Pressure

Seattle notched a resounding win when these teams last met back in April. The Sounders recorded a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Houston Dynamo last time out, and have excelled at both ends of the pitch. Their 23 goals scored is the second-most in MLS, and their eight conceded gives them comfortably the best defensive record in the league.

It’s the defense which they will lean on here. They don’t tend to dominate possession, and they are unlikely to change that. Remaining compact and disciplined will be the plan. Despite Minnesota’s underwhelming goalscoring performance, their expected numbers are relatively impressive. This is a team which can create chances, and ranks third in shots per game.

This won’t follow the same pattern as their April meeting. It’s more likely to be a typical home team performance from Minnesota, who averaged over 61% possession in their last home match. Seattle’s back five is in for a stern test.

Sounders Stay Competitive

Minnesota have picked up 10 of their 15 points at home. They are heading into this match as betting favorites, but Seattle’s unbeaten start to the season makes it hard to bet against them.

It’s tempting to sit on the fence and back a draw, particularly with the +290 price. The Sounders would be happy to extend their unbeaten run given the number of players they are missing, and there’s no question Minnesota is short on confidence. This could easily fall into the visitors playing on the break, and Minnesota’s inability to finish chances is a concern against a defense which has been so resolute in 2021.

Seattle to avoid defeat at -115 looks like a solid option. If searching for longer odds, the +110 on the Sounders to win either half is good value, too.

Pick: Seattle Sounders to win either half (+110)
