The first leg ended 1-1, with Saint-Étienne’s 15th-minute opener from Zaydou Youssouf being canceled just four minutes from time from Auxerre’s Gaetan Perrin. With a place in next season’s Ligue 1 on the line, this couldn’t be tighter.

Saint-Étienne vs Auxerre Prediction

With the first leg ending 1-1, both teams will feel they still have a great chance of playing Ligue 1 soccer next season. For Saint-Etienne, the name of the game was to emerge from the first leg with something to play for on their home patch. Even a single-goal defeat would have been considered okay, and so to draw the game 1-1 was in some ways a bonus, such has been their poor form on the road.

Auxerre will consider themselves still well and truly in the tie and buoyed by Gaetan Perrin’s 86th-minute equalizer. When Les Verts took a 15th-minute lead through Zaydou Youssouf, the scene was set for them to take the game by the scruff of the neck and take it away from Auxerre, but the second goal never came and, instead, it was Les diplomates who found the all-important next goal.

Momentum Now With Les Verts

But there has been a shift in momentum. Prior to the first leg, Auxerre came into the game off the back of a successful season and an equally successful playoff semifinal, but Les Verts – whose season had been a largely disastrous one – have now gained a foothold in a campaign that appeared to be slipping away from them. They will feel their fate is back in their own hands.

Saint-Étienne vs Auxerre Head-to-Head Stats

7-11-20 [Ligue 1] Regular-season record 21-11-6 [Ligue 2]
42 / 77 Goals for / Goals against 61 / 39
18th Finishing position 3rd
3-1 vs Montpellier Biggest win 4-0 vs Niort
5-0 vs Stade Rennais Heaviest defeat 6-0 vs Toulouse

Head-to-Heads Favor Auxerre

The head-to-head stats surprisingly favorAuxerre who have won eight of the 24 meetings between these two teams. By contrast, Les Verts have won just five, meaning that, after Thursday’s game, eleven of their 24 contests have ended as draws – a timely reminder of just how well matched these two clubs have been over the years, despite Saint-Etienne’s more illustrious history.

Prior to their draw on Thursday, their most recent meeting – in the French Cup in February 2017 -saw Les diplomates run out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Biggest Challenge for Les Diplomates

The stats point to a disappointing season for Saint-Etienne from virtually every metric, but they did pick up more points in the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard than they did away from home. Auxerre’s away form, as you would expect from a team that finished third, held up well over the course of the season but this will be their biggest on-the-road challenge of the campaign.

Saint-Étienne vs Auxerre Team Lineups and Injuries

Saint-Étienne Projected Lineup: Bernardoni, Sacko, Mangala, Nade, Thioub, Youssouf, Camara, Trauco, Aouchiche, Bouanga, Khazri.  L

Saint-Étienne Injuries: None.

Auxerre Projected Lineup: Léon, Arcus, Jubal, Coeff, Bernard, Touré, Sinayoko, Hein, Sakhi, Autret, Charbonnier.

Auxerre Injuries: Pellenard.

Saint-Étienne vs Auxerre Pick

Les Verts will be disappointed at not killing the tie off after their early goal on Thursday night but, equally, will feel they at least now have their fate back in their own hands. Auxerre too will still fancy their chances of victory but, for me, that extra Ligue 1 quality could just give them the edge when crunch time arrives. It will be close though – possibly a single-goal victory.

Pick: Saint-Étienne to win (+110) / Saint-Étienne to win 2-1 (+800)
