Three Out of Three for USA

The US cruised through to the knockout phase of the Gold Cup with the minimum of fuss, with a 3-0-0 record in Group B, scoring eight goals along the way and conceding just the one.  They clinched top spot in their group last Sunday after a narrow 1-0 win over Canada thanks to a Shaquell Moore goal after just 20 seconds.

From there on in it was a tough evening for the US, who struggled for potency and cohesion,  and in a surprisingly passive display, they managed just six shots with only one hitting the target. Nevertheless, it was job done and was the fourth successive Gold Cup in which they have won their group at the finals.

USA’s overall record in the latter stages of this tournament is impressive and they’ve only lost once in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup – back in 2000. In their recent history, we have to go back to October 2019 for their last defeat by a fellow CONCACAF nation. Canada beating them 2-0 in the Nations League group stages. Since then, they have won 11 games out of 12.

Good Quarterfinal Record for Jamaica

Jamaica qualified for this quarterfinal having finished second behind Costa Rica in Group C but produced their best performance in a 1-0 defeat by the Costa Ricans on Matchday 3. Prior to that, they had been less than impressive in accruing wins over Suriname and Guadeloupe. But against Los Ticos, they had 18 shots on goal compared to five from their opponents and enjoyed 56 percent of the possession.

Theodore Whitmore’s team has a really good record in the latter stages of the Gold Cup and has made it past the last eight in the last three tournaments. The last two under the management of Whitmore, but have a less-than-ideal record against the USA in the latter stages. As recently as 2019, they were beaten 3-1 by them in the semifinal, and in the 2017 final, the US was 2-1 winners.

On a more positive note, Jamaica has not lost a quarterfinal at this tournament since 2011 when, again, it was the USA who were their conquerors.

Arriola Back to Lead US Attack?

The US hopes to have striker Paul Arriola fit for this one after he had to sit out the Canada game with a hamstring problem, while Reggie Cannon has a chance of making the starting XI after impressing as a second-half substitute against the Canadians. I expect Gregg Berhalter to get as close to he can to the starting XI who beat Martinique in game 2, after using the Canada game to give game time to some of his fringe players.

Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake missed the Costa Rica game – Dillon Barnes replaced him – but has a chance of being recalled. In defense, Kemar Lawrence was handed his first start of the tournament in that same match and, despite defeat, played well, so could form part of a back-four that also includes Damion Lowe, Adrian Mariappa, and Oniel Fisher.

USA vs Jamaica Best Bets

USA has an excellent recent record against Jamaica, having won four of the last five matchups between these two, and have not conceded a single goal in their last three Gold Cup quarterfinals.  Jamaica is also unbeaten in their last three Gold Cup last-eight ties, and so something has to give here.

While the USA looks to be technically better equipped than Jamaica, it’s worth noting that the Jamaicans produced their best soccer against their toughest opponents (Costa Rica). They may be unphased by playing the USA on home soil. This might be tight and may need extra time to separate them, bringing the draw after 90 minutes into play. For me, that is very much where the value lies.

Pick: USA and Jamaica to draw (+380) / 0-0 after 90 minutes (+1000)
