The USA Humbled by Sweden

The USA were rocked on their heels in their opener when they were beaten 3-0 by Sweden; a result that ended an incredible 44-game unbeaten run. They bounced back however in game 2 when New Zealand felt the full force of the USA’s quality in a thumping 6-1 defeat in Saitama.

The Sweden result was one of the biggest Olympic soccer shocks, not just because of the emphatic scoreline but also because of the dominance of the Swedes, so the response against New Zealand was so important in terms of the USA rebuilding belief and confidence. Luckily for the US, New Zealand offered limited resistance, and two first-half goals – from Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan – steadied the nerves before they were able to hit the gas in the second half with four more.

The Matildas Off to a Flyer

Australia’s Olympics got off to a flyer with victory over near-neighbors New Zealand but, like the USA, they too came unstuck when faced with the buoyant Swedes. A win in game 2 would have sent the Matildas through to the knockout phase but in an entertaining game, it was the Swedes who were slightly more composed and ruthless when it really counted.

It was close though and after falling behind early on, Australia, through Chelsea striker Sam Kerr, took a 2-1 lead early in the second half and looked at that stage capable of going on to win the game. Despite the Swedes pulling level and then ahead, the Matildas had a great chance to pull level from the penalty spot but Kerr missed, and it was Sweden who struck late to make it 4-2.

The Matildas’ Swedish coach Tony Gustavsson now has to galvanize his squad ahead of this massive game, knowing they were close to securing their pathway through to the last eight but are now faced with a giant hurdle.

Legends Are Back for USA

USA coach Vlatko Andonovski made several changes for the New Zealand game, with some of his most experienced and decorated players, like Carli Lloyd, Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe, being recalled to the starting XI. The changes appeared to work, so I would expect him to stick with a similar XI, although though Sam Mewis and Christen Press are also both pushing hard for a start.

For the Matildas, it goes without saying that Kerr will again be leading their line, as she edges ever closer to Lisa De Vanna’s total as Australia’s all-time leading goalscorer. The former NWSL striker is just three goals short and it is a matter of when not if, with the USA game being the ideal time to get that particular job done. Gustavsson usually sets his team up in a 3-4-2-1 formation but against the USA this may have to adapt into a back five, with Andonovski’s side expected to dominate possession.

USA vs Australia Best Bet

If the form book is followed this will be a comfortable win for the USA but Australia will take heart from Sweden’s emphatic win on opening day. It exposed fallibility in the US that had not been evident for 44 games and so the Matildas will believe there is a win here for them if they are brave enough.

The USA looks likely to revert back to their tried and tested names, but this is an aging team and could be pushed all the way if Australia can keep the tempo and the energy levels high. Even if they are unable to find the win they need, the Australians will be determined to keep it tight as they could still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. On that basis, I see the USA’s extra quality as being decisive but only just.
