Kenin vs Kanepi Prediction
This is going to be a really interesting match between the 2020 Australian Open champion and 35-year old Kanepi, who’s been out of the spotlight for quite a while.
Kanepi is coming off a dominant win against Anastasija Sevastova, where she won in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-1. The aggression and confidence she played with in the first round was almost unexpected. She is about to go up against one of the best players in the WTA right now, but if she can carry even just the slightest bit of momentum from that first match into this one, it’ll be close.
Kenin on the other hand, is coming off a closer first round win against her opponent. Maddison Inglis. She did win in straight sets, but it was much closer than Kanepi’s shutout performance, winning 7-5, 6-4.
These two have played each other once before, with Kanepi winning their last meeting in 2018. That match came before Kenin really found her stride, and became one of the top players in the WTA, but it’s still worth noting. It’ll be a close match, and I think will definitely do the distance. The best bet is going beyond the money line.
Pick: Kenin in three sets (+360)
Bencic vs Kuznetsova
These two players are no stranger to each other. Their singles head-to-head record stands at 3-2 in favor of Bencic. Their most recent meeting was in the Doha quarterfinals in 2020 where Kuznetsova won in straight sets.
23-year old Bencic is coming off a tight win against Lauren Davis, defeating her opponent 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. She was clearly rusty heading into that match, and as the match went on you could see her getting more and more comfortable, getting back to the type of play she’s used to.
35-year old Kuznetsova is coming off a very dominant, straightforward win. She defeated Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-2.
In this instance against Kuznetsova, if it were to go the distance, I think Bencic has the upperhand. But if Kuznetsova over powers and out plays Bencic out of the gate, it’ll be trouble for the young star.
Pick: Kuznetsova in straight sets (+190)
Collins vs Pliskova Prediction
The sixth seed Pliskova will take on American Danielle Collins in the second round of the Aussie Open. The two players just played each other in January at the Yarra Valley Classic, and this will be the second time they’ve seen each other in their careers. The last match they played, Collins took the win, defeating Pliskova 7-6(5). 7-6(3). An extremely tight match that could’ve gone either way, and I’m expecting it to be the same this time around.

Collins put on a solid performance in the first round against Ana Bogdan, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. She’s clearly improved her play on outdoor hard courts, playing extremely well in 2021 so far, having taken a set off of Serena Williams last tournament. Collins has beat and upset her fair share of opponents. I can only imagine because of the quick turnaround between the last time these two players played and this time coming up, Pliskova will be looking to avenge her loss.
Pliskova had a straightforward win against her first round opponent Jasmine Paolini. She dominated, winning 6-0, 6-2. Collins will definitely be a tougher opponent for her this round, but there’s always momentum coming off a win like that.
Once again, Pliskova is the slight favorite with a -122 moneyline, but I would look beyond that.
Pick: Pliskova in straight sets (+190)
