Bublik Reaches Second Masters Quarterfinal of 2021

In just over an hour, Bublik defeated Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 6-3 to reach his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal of 2021. Before 2021, Bublik had never made it pasted the Round of 64 at a Masters 1000 tournament.

In the match against Karatsev, Bublik recorded 14 aces with a 79 win percentage when landing his first serve.

On his route to the quarterfinals, Bublik was also able to send home Denis Shapovalov when he beat the Canadian 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, in the Round of 32 to take a 2-0 head-to-head series lead against him.

Bublik now has a career-high 19 wins in 2021, and we’re only in May. The 23-year old had never won a ATP Masters 1000 match outside Miami, and has now notched three impressive wins against Marton Fucsovic, Shapovalov, and Karatsev.

Ruud’s Biggest Win of His Career

Ruud is expected to make his Top 20 debut in the ranking following his performance here in Madrid. The 22-year is coming off the biggest win of his career, in terms of ranking, as he defeated World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(4), 6-4 and booked his spot in the quarterfinals.

In the hour and a half match, the 22-year old Norwegian recorded four aces, while landing 74 percent of his first serve, and earning the one and only service break of the match in the second set.

Ruud took advantage of some uncharacteristic mistakes from Tsitsipas, and has now reached the quarterfinals of his third consecutive clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event.

Head-to-Head & Best Bet

We only have one match to go off between these two young players. The last time they saw each other was back in 2019. Ruud won the Round of 32 match in St. Petersburg 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2.

It’s expected that Ruud enters this match as the favorite. But he should be prepared for a tight match in the quarterfinals, as Bublik has surprised many of us with his showing here in Madrid.

Like many of these matches, the serve will be a big factor in who wins. Both players have strong serves, but Ruud put on quite the show against Tsitsipas. Not only did he not provide a break point opportunity, he was only taken to deuce once in his 12 service games.

Bublik, like I mentioned earlier recorded 14 aces in his previous match, but managed nine double faults as well. On a court that he considers his least favorite, Bublik will have to tighten up on those double faults if he wants a chance at beating Ruud.

I’m going to give the edge to Ruud as he’s been more consistent, and slightly more successful on the year.

The Pick: Ruud (-335); 2-0 (-113)
