Rublev Goes the Distance Against Daniil Medvedev

It went down to the wire, but Rublev managed to defeat 2020 champion, Medvedev 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(7). The Russian was looking to have have a better start to the tournament than he did last year, where he flopped in front of everyone.

Medvedev came out strong in the first set, and managed to take it in a tiebreak. This set up Rublev for a do or die situation. He wanted to avoid an early knockout like he had last year, so he had to win the next set to force a third.

Despite missing seven set points, he still managed to record the win in just about two and a half hours. He’ll now face another tournament winner in Djokovic.

Djokovic Stuns Stefanos Tsitsipas

The 35-year old opened his year end tournament up against second seed Tsitsipas, and defeated him 6-4, 7(7)-6(4). With the win, Djokovic collected his 50th win over a Top 3 player, making himself the first player to do so.

He headed into the match as the heavy favorite, so the win is not much of a surprise. He managed to extend his head-to-head against Tsitsipas to 10-2. And unfortunately with the loss, Djokovic ended Tsitsipas’ dreams of ending the year at World No. 1.

He’ll now look to Rublev, who he has had success against in the past at this tournament, but the Russian did beat him earlier this year.

Second Meeting of 2022

Rublev and Djokovic’s first meeting came this time last year when they played each other in the round robin of the Nitto ATP Finals. It was Djokovic that took that match in straight sets.

Their second career meeting came earlier this year in Serbia when Rublev actually defeated the hometown favorite in three sets to win the tournament. Their current head-to-head is split at 1-1.

Rublev vs Djokovic Prediction

The thing about this tournament, is no opponent is going to be easy. These are the top players on tour, and some have sat in the Top 5 and Top 10 for most of their career.

With three consecutive final appearances leading up to the year end tournament, the Serb just looks to be the one who has the edge to win this match. Rublev will put up a fight, no doubt. But Djokovic should be able to win this with ease.

Best Bet: Novak Djokovic 2-0 (-120)
