Cherries on a Charge

The Cherries are on a seven-game winning run and have done everything possible to put pressure on second-placed Watford. Unfortunately, for them, this outstanding run of form has probably come a few weeks too late and an eight-point gap with only three games remaining leaves them with only the slightest chance of automatic promotion.

Realistically, leaders Norwich and the Hornets will go up in the automatic promotion spots.

This should not detract though from the fantastic job Jonathan Woodgate has done since being appointed the Cherries’ permanent manager in early February. The same squad under the management of Jason Tindall was bereft of confidence and had slipped out of the playoff places, but armed with the same talented group of players, Woodgate has turned their form around spectacularly.

The seven-game winning run included an away victory over leaders Norwich and the Cherries currently look full of goals. Bournemouth fans had previously heard a string of exotic names linked with their vacant manager post, including Thierry Henry, but such has been Woodgate’s impact, most will be expecting his temporary tenure to be made permanent in the summer.

Danjuma the Big Threat

If there is a slight chink in the Cherries’ armor right now, it is a lack of clean sheets – just one in their last six games – but the fact they have scored 18 goals during those six games tells the story of a team that is currently blowing its opponents away. While Dutch winger Danjuma has been grabbing the headlines with a string of outstanding displays, he has been very well supported by Dominic Solanke and Phillip Billing.

While their charge looks likely to have come too late for the second automatic place, Bournemouth will be keen to carry this momentum into the playoffs, particularly against a team they could end up playing.

Bees on the Slide

While Brentford has a game in hand on Bournemouth – and could leapfrog the Cherries here with a win – they are in a very different place. For most of the season, the Bees were pushing Norwich, Swansea, and Watford hard for the automatic places but a poor run of form at the worst possible time has ended their hopes of a top-two place. For them, these remaining three games are all about regaining some confidence and momentum ahead of the playoffs.

While Brentford still have plenty of firepower in their ranks in the form of the division’s top goalscorer Ivan Toney, they have also slipped alarmingly down the form table. Three wins and six draws in their last ten have seen their Premier League dream fade, and they will not look forward to the playoffs after missing out in the 2020 final against Fulham.

The onus remains very much on Toney, who has scored 29 of the Bees’ 72 goals this season, and with Brentford’s goal output slowing down in the final third of the campaign, Bournemouth will know if they can contain his threat they will win the game.

Bournemouth vs Brentford Best Bets

With the Cherries in fine form and Brentford wobbling, everything points to a home win. Everything also points to there being goals in this, so consider the double of a Bournemouth and +2.5 goals. Also worth considering is Billing as the first goalscorer.

Pick: Bournemouth to win (+140) / More than 2.5 goals (+100)
