There has been movement in the line since the odds for this boxing bout initially opened up. Paul has remained the favorite all throughout though in the eyes of the oddsmakers.

Jake Paul Gambling Favorite?

While Jake Paul isn’t hugely experienced, he does have more pro boxing experience than Woodley who is a debutant sweet science practitioner.

The last time Paul fought a mixed martial arts champion in the sweet science, the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren odds reflected that the YouTuber was favored. The nature of the first-round stoppage victory certainly validated that betting line on April 17th.

Askren is a longtime friend and training partner of Woodley. The redemptive underpinnings of this bout have been stirring up a bit of bad blood between the two combatants ahead of this end of Summer clash.

The more popular option from the broader public is YouTuber/ Disney star turned pugilist Jake Paul. Considering his marginal edge in boxing experience as compared to Woodley.

I also think the casual fight viewing public has an affinity for knockouts and recency bias, with that confluence favoring Paul.

The Problem Child is 3-0 with 3 KOs so far and will face his fourth straight opponent that competes in the big gloves for the first time.

Why Is Tyron Woodley the Underdog?

The Chosen One is turning 40 in April, and Woodley’s age is one of the narrative tendrils informing the betting line for this one.

The 24-year-old Paul also has a clear size advantage mostly fighting at 190 pounds. While Woodley has historically torn through competitors at 170 pounds.

Despite this broader public perception, there are many that are more firmly entrenched in the combat sports community who see things differently.

Ultimately, I think some level of underdog money is going to come in on Woodley here. On paper, this one is closer to a 50-50 kind of contest, and I think that will foster some betting on Tyron Woodley.

While Woodley isn’t necessarily an expert-level striker as some of Showtime’s promotional material purports, he is still far more proficient with his punches than Askren.

Tyron Woodley is a former UFC welterweight champion who has a demonstrable level of power in his hands. While he is on a bit of a drought having gone winless over the last three years, he is still far more combat certified.

I think Paul will remain a favorite on fight night. But some underdog money will come in on Woodley to shorten the gap.
