- See the odds, trends and predictions for the game below
One of the major leagues’ most underachieving teams plays one of the most overachieving when the New York Yankees visit the Seattle Mariners at 10:10 p.m. ET Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series at T-Mobile Park.
Favored to win the American League East when the season began, the Yankees (42-41) have lost seven of their last nine games. They trail the first-place Boston Red Sox by 10.5 games in the division standings but are favored Tuesday.
The Mariners (45-40) have won four of their last five games and 11 of 15 and are just 3.5 games out of the second AL wild card. Many observers thought at the start of the season the rebuilding organization was at least another year away from contending.
Jameson Taillon (3-4, 4.53) will start for the Yankees against left-hander Justus Sheffield (5-7, 5.88).

Taillon Trending Upward
Taillon has won each of his last two starts after going 0-2 in his eight previous outings. However, Taillon had to survive to get the victory last Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium. He gave up five runs in 5.1 innings on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

In his first season after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade, Taillon has registered just two quality starts in 15 outings. He also has pitched at least six innings twice after missing last season while rehabbing from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
Taillon has been brutal on the road this season, going 0-3 with an 11.12 ERA in five starts. He is 1-2 with a 5.93 ERA in nine starts at night.
This will be just the second time Taillon has faced the Mariners. He beat them in Seattle in 2016, allowing one run in six innings while pitching for the Pirates.
A couple of Mariners hitters are slumping, including second baseman Shed Long Jr., who has five hits in his last 33 at-bats for a .152 batting average. However, he does some flair for the dramatic.

Catcher Luis Torrens has homered in back-to-back games but has a .179 average over his last eight games.
Sheffield Faces Old Team
Perhaps facing the Yankees will get Sheffield on track after going 0-3 with a 9.35 ERA in his last four starts.
Sheffield made his major league debut with the Yankees in 2018. He was traded to the Mariners after only one season in a trade that netted New York left-hander James Paxton.
Getting called to the big leagues was obviously quite a thrill for Sheffield.

His last time out, Sheffield gave up four runs in four innings to the Toronto Blue Jays last Wednesday in Buffalo, but did not factor in the decision.
Sheffield has just three quality starts in 14 games in 2021, his last coming May 15. He is 4-3 with a 5.11 ERA in seven starts at home ad 4-4 with a 6.36 ERA in nine night starts. Sheffield lost his lone career start against the Yankees in 2019, getting tagged for five runs in 4.1 innings.
Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu has been on base in 21 straight games, going 28 for 86 (.326) with 12 runs, four doubles, four homer runs, 18 RBIs and 10 walks.
It's nice to have insurance. DJ LeMahieu agrees!
Two more come home on the RBI single to lead 7-4 headed to the 9th.

Third baseman Gio Urshela has a five-game hitting streak in which he is 6 for 16 (.375) with two homers.
Holiday Leftovers
Both teams were off Monday. On Sunday, the Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 4-1 at T-Mobile Park as Chris Flexen pitched six effective innings, allowing one run and four hits. Torrens homered for the seventh time in his past 13 games.

The Yankees split a day-night doubleheader against the crosstown Mets on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, losing 10-5 in the first game then notching a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Urshela hit a three-run homer in the second game to help the Yankees avoid being swept. Chad Green (3-4) closed with three perfect innings, striking out six in his longest outing since September 2019. The right-hander finished with an immaculate seventh.

In the opener, struggling Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman gave up a tying home run to Pete Alonso leading off the seventh inning. Jose Peraza later had a go-ahead, two-run double off the left-hander.
Yankees Dominate Series
The teams will be meeting for the first time since 2019. The Yankees have won 18 of the last 22 games against the Mariners dating to 2016.
While it is tough history to buck, the feeling here is the Mariners and Sheffield will find a way to get it done against Taillon, who has struggled mightily away from Yankee Stadium.
The Pick: Mariners (+128)
