The New York Jets’ Odds of Going 0-16 Now Listed at Better Than 50% After Losing to Raiders

• The New York Jets odds of finishing the season with an 0-16 record are now -110
• The Jets lost 31-28 to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday in the final minute to fall to 0-12
• Just two NFL teams have ever gone 0-16: the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns

Even when they are on the verge of winning, the New York Jets wind up losing.

The Jets fell to 0-12 when they lost a heartbreaker to the visiting Las Vegas Raiders 31-28 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The Raiders pulled out the win on Derek Carr’s 46-yard touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs III with five seconds remaining.

The Jets remain the only winless team in the NFL this season and are on pace to join the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns as the third 0-16 team in NFL history.

In late October, the Jets’ odds of finishing 0-16 were +290.

Their current -110 odds carry an implied probability of 52.38% chance of losing all four of their remaining games. The sum of the probabilities is 104.76% with a standard 4.76% vig.

2019 Momentum Lost

The Jets were seemingly on the upswing at the end of the 2019 season.

They won six of their last eight games following a 1-7 start to finish 7-9 in Adam Gase’s first season as coach.

Back then, no one was plotting Gase’s career course like they are now.

The oddsmakers certainly did not see a potential winless season coming for the Jets. The Washington Football Team and Jacksonville Jaguars were considered the most likely 0-16 possibilities

The Jaguars made those bets losers in Week 1 when they upset the Indianapolis Colts at home. However, Jacksonville has since lost 11 straight games.

Washington also pulled an opening-day upset, beating the Eagles in Philadelphia. Washington took a 4-7 record in its game against the Steelers on Monday evening in Pittsburgh.

The Jets, meanwhile, dropped their opener to the Bills 27-17 in Buffalo and things have only gotten worse.

Dropping a Heartbreaker

The Jets’ most frustrating moment of the season, though, came Sunday when Carr beat the blitz and found Ruggs for the winning score.

Jets safety Marcus Maye openly questioned defensive coordinator Gregg Williams calling a blitz in that situation while speaking with reporters after the game.

Gase and management were listening because Williams was fired Monday. The axing of the controversial Williams – he was the mastermind of the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal from 2009-11 – will make some around the league happy.

The Jets pulled in front of the Raiders 28-24 on Ty Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown run with 5:34 to go. New York then seem to seal the victory when they stopped the Raiders on downs at the Jets’ 9-yard line with 1:37 left.

However, the Jets then went three and out and were forced to punt. That gave the Raiders the ball at their 39 with 35 seconds remaining, just enough time to pull out the win.

No Wins in Sight

The Jets are 13.5-point underdogs this week for their road game with the Seattle Seahawks. New York also figures substantial dogs in each of their last three games.

The Jets will get to see old friend Jamal Adams, which might not be a good thing.

Last year, Jamal Adams (9 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 FF) was the best player on the Jets when they beat the Giants, 34-27.
This year, Adams (11 tackles, 1 sack) was the best player on the Seahawks when they lost to the Giants, 17-12.

After facing the Seahawks, the Jets visit the Los Angeles Rams, host the Cleveland Browns then finish by playing at the New England Patriots.

Doing a little guesstimating here, it is likely the Rams will be favored by 14 points, the Browns by seven points and the Patriots by nine points.

The only game the Jets would seemingly have a small chance of winning is against the Browns in their remaining game in the Meadowlands.

The Jets did play the Patriots tough at home in Week 9, losing 30-27 as a nine-point underdog. However, New England is playing much better lately and has won four of its last five games to even its record to 6-6.

Will Change Matter?

It is hard to imagine changing defensive coordinators – assistant head coach/linebackers Frank Bush will now make the calls – is going to make a whole lot of difference.

Bush does not have a good track record as an NFL coordinator.

The Jets’ defense is just bad, ranking 29^th in the NFL in total yards allowed (398.8 a game) and 30^th in points given up (29.4).

Of course, the offense is even worse. The Jets are last in the league with averages of 15.0 points and 276.8 total yards.

Thus, the Jets look like a good bet to finish 0-16 and a solid value play at -110.

But at least going winless should net them Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in next year’s draft.
