Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson ended Artemi Panarin’s season after throwing him to the ice during a scrum earlier this week. It’s been a distracting end to another unsuccessful season in New York but really, would you expect anything less from a team owned by James Dolan?

Wednesday night the Capitals and Rangers met again and it was instant chaos. After the initial line brawl the inevitable happened. Washington won with ease. It seems clear New York is ready to cross the finish line and start their summer.

One player to focus on the last two games of the season is number one overall pick Alexis Lafreniere. After opening the season as a heavy favorite to capture the Calder Trophy as the leagues top rookie, the Rangers freshman won’t even be nominated.

He has 11 goals and nine assists while playing only 13 minutes per game. He didn’t see any power play time and that could change as the season comes to a close. With Panarin out, it seems like a natural fit to plug in the gifted winger for a couple of games to boost his confidence heading into the offseason. How big will the drop off be from an MVP-caliber player making over $11.5 million to a rookie who hasn’t lived up to the hype? Likely pretty big.

Marchand Closing Campaign Strong

Bruins forward Brad Marchand is closing the regular season playing great hockey. He has six goals and seven assists in the last 10 games and is now sixth in the league in both categories. Once known as a pest, Marchand has developed into one of the leagues most elite talents. He is a lock to appear on Team Canada at the Olympics and for good reason.

Tallying 27 goals and 36 assists in this shortened season has been impressive.

The fact he has 17 more points than the next best Bruin puts to rest any notion it’s simply his line mates helping him along. He has seven points in six games against New York this season and has a great chance to build on those numbers in the final two games. There’s lots on the line for Boston with playoff seeding still up in the air, so expect to see Marchand and linemates Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak early and often.

Boston In Prime Position To Win Big

The Bruins are clear favorites for a reason. While they have locked up a playoff spot, they could still finish anywhere from first to fourth in the East Division. That should be more than enough motivation for them to bring their best game into this match up. On the flipside, the Rangers seem content to count down the final 120 minutes of the season and put this mess in the rear view mirror. Trust Boston to win big, making the puck line the best value bet.
