Two of the most successful club teams in the history of the CONCACAF competition meet on Thursday, October 28th, to decide who is the best team in this year’s Champions League. With seven previous titles in this competition – most recently in 2016 – Club America is the most accomplished team in the history of the CONCACAF Champions League/Champions Cup, while Monterrey has won the title on four occasions, most recently in 2019.

However, at least one of their incredible records is set to end at Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe on Thursday night, with one team set to lose a CONCACAF Champions League final for the first time. Both teams have perfect showpiece records coming into this game.

They kicked things off with a 6-1 aggregate victory over Atletico Pantoja of the Dominican Republic in the round-of-16, followed by a 5-2 two-legged win over Columbus Crew of MLS in the last eight.

The semifinal round didn’t get much tougher for Monterrey either, as it romped to a 5-1 aggregate victory over defending Mexican champion Cruz Azul.

America Takes Tougher Path

The seven-time CONCACAF champions, however, made a tougher go of their road to the final. Club America barely squeaked by Honduran side Olimpia on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline in the round-of-16, before clambering by the Portland Timbers courtesy of a 4-2 aggregate score.

Its final four matchup was something of a formality, however, with America soaring past the Philadelphia Union 4-0.

Rayados In a Rut

Despite breezing through to the final, it’s worth remembering that the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal stage wrapped up six weeks ago, allowing plenty of time for fluctuations in form for both teams.

That is certainly the case for Monterrey, who are in the middle of a four-game losing skid. Worse still, it has only scored one goal in those four games and has been shut out in each of its last three matches. As a result, Los Rayados have fallen off the pace in the league, dropping to seventh, 14 points from the summit. On a more positive note though, Monterrey has zero injury concerns coming into this match, giving head coach Javier Aguirre a full squad to choose from for tonight’s match.

America On Top

That summit is occupied by – you guessed it – Club America, which is soaring in Liga MX, sitting eight points clear after 15 rounds. And Los Aguilas are on fire at the moment, unbeaten in their past six and riding a four-game winning streak, during which they’ve conceded just one goal.

In fact, America has lost just once all season and is tied for the best defensive record in the Mexican league, giving up just eight goals through 15 games.

And while head coach Santiago Solari has the luxury of almost a full squad from which to select his team, he will be without injured striker Leonardo Suarez.

America Has Historical Edge

While both these clubs are well versed in playing each other, having met on numerous occasions through the years, Los Aguilas have a decided edge in those meetings. Over their past 52 head-to-head contests, Club America has 21 wins, with Monterrey triumphing on 15 occasions.

However, Monterrey won their past two meetings, home and away in last season’s Liga MX campaign.

Best bet: Club America (+250)
