  • It’s all to play for in Group G of the Champions League group stage
  • Lille are top of the group, but they are just three points ahead of fourth-placed Wolfsburg
  • The two sides meet at Volkswagen Arena on Wednesday, December, 8th

No group is as evenly balanced as Group G heading into Matchday 6 of the Champions League Group Stage. Lille top the section on eight points, leaving them just three clear of Wolfsburg, who reside in fourth. Salzburg, starting the matchday with seven points, are hosting Sevilla, who have amassed six points from the first five matches.

Lille and Wolfsburg matched up for the first time since 2014 on Matchday 1. It ended in a goalless draw. A lot has changed for both teams since then, however, with both sides languishing in mid-table domestically. Wolfsburg’s form has been just as underwhelming in European action with just one win from five matches – they need a second victory on Wednesday to avoid falling out of the continental competition altogether.

A draw is enough to guarantee Lille’s place in the last 16. They will confirm top spot with a victory, avoiding Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the next round.

Team News

Firing Mark van Bommel hasn’t had much of an impact on Wolfsburg’s form. Florian Kohfeldt has switched to a back three of late, though it hasn’t stopped his team from falling to consecutive defeats. They are depleted for the visit of Lille too, with Lukas Nmecha due to an accumulation of bookings. Koen Casteels, Xaver Schlager, Bartosz Bialek, William and Admir Mehmedi all listed as doubtful.

Kohfeldt could switch things up after a shock 3-0 loss to Mainz at the weekend. Whether that means a change of formation again or just a mix-up of personnel is hard to tell, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a different XI. Yannick Gerhardt and Maximilian Philipp could be in line to start after coming off the bench on Saturday.

Lille is without Jonathan Bamba and Xeka through suspension, though Benjamin Andre and Jonathan Ikone are back from their respective bans. Former Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes could get the start on the left flank with Bamba out, while Jocelyn Gourvennec has options in defense thanks to Sven Botman’s return from injury.

One-Way Traffic

Wolfsburg’s John Brooks was sent off just after the hour mark when these sides met on Matchday 1. Lille was already controlling the match, however, and finished with 17 shots to Wolfsburg’s two. The form of the two sides of late suggests we could see a similar pattern of play on Wednesday.

Lille is unbeaten in seven in all competitions, winning their last two. They have posted strong expected goal numbers all year long.

Wolfsburg has three wins in 15 matches, including three consecutive defeats coming into this one. Even their good early-season form wasn’t supported by the underlying numbers.

It’s worth noting, though, that Wolfsburg has lost just three times at home this season. New limits to football crowds in Germany will dampen the atmosphere on Wednesday, however, and could limit the impact of home advantage.

Wolfsburg vs Lille Best Bet

Lille’s defensive record will concern some bettors here. Les Dogues have kept just one clean sheet in nine matches, which points towards the -155 price on both teams to score being good value even with Wolfsburg’s goal-scoring issues lately.

There’s no question Lille are a strong price to win this one straight up. It’s a stark contrast in recent form between the two sides, but the visitors could take a cautious approach here in the knowledge a draw will see them through to the knockout rounds.

The double chance on Lille to avoid defeat could be a better option. It’s a short price as a single, so a single-game parlay on BTTS and Lille to win or draw is the way to go.

Pick: Both teams to score and Lille double chance (+150)
