Preakness Stakes Trends to Keep in Mind:

  • 24 horses have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes
  • 13 horses have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes
  • Since 2000, no horse had won the Preakness after finishing worse than sixth in the Kentucky Derby. That changed in 2019 when War of Will finished 7th in the Derby and won the Preakness
  • Since 2000, seven horses have won the Preakness after winning the Kentucky Derby
  • Only one jockey has won back-to-back Preakness Stakes since 1997. That came in 2014 and 2015 when Victor Espinoza won with California Chrome and American Pharoah

War of Will’s 2019 winning time was the fastest winning time since Curlin’s win in 2007. War of Will won the Preakness with a time of 1:54.34. But in 2020, that was bested by Swiss Skydiver’s winning time of 1:53.28, the fastest winning time at the Preakness since all the way back in 1973 when Secretariat won with a time of 1:53.00.

Trainers with the Most Preakness Stakes Wins

Will 2020 be the year that Bob Baffert passes R. Wyndham Walden? The Arizona-born trainer has compiled over 2,800 career wins, including five Preakness Stakes titles from 1997 to 2018.

In 2020, Kenneth McPeek was a first-time winner with Swiss Skydiver.

Jockeys with the Most Preakness Stakes Wins

Eddie Arcaro won more American classic races than any other jockey in history and finished atop the earnings leaderboard six times from 1940 to 1958.  His record of six Preakness Stakes titles is unlikely to be ever be matched anytime soon.

In 2020, Robby Albarado won for the second time in his career, with his first coming in 2007 while riding Curlin.
