The UEFA Champions League celebrates their first four teams already locked in the quarterfinals, with top names like Juventus, Real Madrid, PSG and the Borussia Dortmund.

The worst part of the week came when the referee sent off Nani from Manchester United in the game against Real Madrid.  The ejection killed United and lift Madrid to advance to the next round.

“The manager is not in a fit state to talk to the referee about the decision,” said Manchester United assistant Phelan. “It speaks volumes that I am sat here. We are all witnesses to a decision that seemed very harsh, and incredible at that moment in the game.”

The Sun’s review of the games dictates: what happened here last night had little to do with any shortcomings on behalf of a side that had made Real look second best for so long. With 11 men on the pitch, they had the game firmly in their grasp. They then gave it everything they had when reduced to 10 men and up against a team who had scored 27 times in 15 Champions League away games under Mourinho, never failing to find the net.

For Real Madrid coach, Jose Mourinho the decision to send off Nani changed the game in a bad way. “In my opinion, the best team lost,” said the Portuguese coach.

“I think it had the same influence as the decision two years ago to send Pepe off in the semi-final (defeat by Barcelona),” he added.

“When you are talking about football at this level, with such a fine balance between two equally matched teams, playing with one man down for such a long period is going to change a lot in the game.”
