Eagles Vie for Ninth Straight Win in Date with Tigers

The West Coast Eagles will be looking to make it nine in a row as they take on the Richmond Tigers on Thursday morning as slim 3.5-point underdogs. The Eagles continued to roll with last week’s 61-49 win over the GWS Giants, and maintain control of fourth place on the AFL ladder. While the Eagles continue to lag four points behind Port Adelaide and Brisbane in the battle for top spot, they have soared on the AFL Premiership odds, where they now lead the way as +340 favorites.

The Eagles have built their steady success on a stingy defense. The club has surrendered more than 50 points on just two occasions during their current tear, which has featured wins over top-flight opponents like Collingwood and Geelong.

The Tigers are hoping to maintain the touch that has earned them wins in four of their past five contests as they hit the oval for Thursday’s contest as -128 moneyline favorites. Richmond needed a big second-half effort to get past Essendon in last week’s 73-61 win. However, consistency remains a concern, with the club stringing together three straight wins just once during the 8-4-1 win-loss-draw start to the campaign.

Currently pegged as strong +380 second favorites to defend their AFL Premiership title, the Tigers have also struggled to contain the Eagles offense in recent meetings, surrendering an average of 106 points while going 1-1-0 in their past two matchups. Could another high-scoring affair be in the works on Thursday?

Picks: West Coast Eagles +3.5 (-110); OVER 123.5 (-112)

Power Poised to Feast on Offensively Challenged Swans

The Port Adelaide Power have a golden opportunity to break their tie in points with the idle Brisbane Lions as they face off against the Sydney Swans as massive 29.5-point chalk. The Power rebounded from a humiliating 91-31 loss to Geelong by knocking off the Hawthorn Hawks 68-58 last week, and have now claimed victory in four of five outings.

However, the Power have been far from dominant in their recent wins, claiming victory by an average margin of just 14 points over their past three. And with just 99 total points scored over their past two matches, it is likely to take a massive effort for the club to cover a huge 29.5-point spread.

That could all change against the Swans, whose offense was non-existent in last week’s 50-19 loss to Fremantle. Sydney had shown signs of overcoming a slow start during a recent 2-2-0 run that featured solid wins over the Giants and Hawks, and a narrow defeat at the hands of the Collingwood Magpies. However, the club’s offense has been particularly lacking while playing as the road team, averaging just 37.4 points over their past five.

With the offense misfiring, and a track record of failure in trying to shut down the Power attack, which has averaged over 98 points per match in the past two meetings between these clubs, Friday night’s matchup is likely to be a long one for the Swans.

Picks: Port Adelaide Power -29.5 (-110); UNDER 121.5 (-112)

Demons on the Rebound vs Struggling Saints

The Melbourne Demons have their work cut out for them as they seek to reclaim a spot among the top eight as they battle the St. Kilda Saints on Saturday as 2.5-point underdogs. The Demons are coming off a lopsided 80-52 loss to the Western Bulldogs that put the brakes on an impressive three-match win streak, in which they tallied over 93 points per match.

Melbourne has struggled against clubs ahead of them on the AFL ladder, including losses against each of the current top five teams in the league. The Demons have also been regularly outclassed by St. Kilda, losing three straight while allowing 106 points per match.

A 100-point outburst is just what the Saints need as they enter Saturday’s contest as attractive -122 moneyline favorites. St. Kilda fell just short of a huge upset win in a 50-48 loss to Brisbane last week, and have averaged just 50 points per match while losing two of their past three.

However, after stellar defensive performances against the Lions, and the Essendon Bombers two weeks ago, the Saints are well-positioned to outlast the Demons in what promised to be a low-scoring affair.

Picks: St. Kilda Saints -2.5 (-110); UNDER 125.5 (-112)
