  • ESPN BET holds a top-three market share spot in Massachusetts after its first full month of operation
  • The newest sports betting operator notched nearly $50 million in online sports betting for the month
  • The state reported more than $658.6 million in sports betting handle for the month

ESPN BET, after its first full month of operation, holds a top-three market share spot in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported $658.69 million in combined Massachusetts sports betting handle for the month of December and also took in more than $12 million in sports betting tax revenue.

ESPN BET, the newest sports betting operator in the commonwealth, still lags behind DraftKings and FanDuel, but leapt into the top-three for operator market share after its first full month of in December.

ESPN BET Top-Three, But No Data on Promotional Spending

DraftKings and FanDuel again dominated the sports betting landscape of Massachusetts for the month of December. DraftKings reported $315.8 million in online sports betting handle and collected nearly $6 million in taxes for the state. FanDuel reported $187.3 million in online sports betting handle and collected more than $3.8 million in taxes.

ESPN BET, which launched nationwide partway through November, reported $49.98 million in online sports betting handle and collected more than $816,000 in taxes. It topped other sports betting operator mainstays in the commonwealth, such as Caesars Sportsbook and BetMGM, to claim a top-three market share.

ESPN BET has thrust itself into the sports betting conversation since launching in November and has outspent nearly ever single other operator in promotional spending to accrue a sizable user base. While the Massachusetts Gaming Commission does not provide data on operator promotional spending, it’s likely that ESPN BET is followed the same strategy these last two months in the commonwealth as it is in other states.

For instance, in Ohio ESPN BET spent more than $29 million in promotional spend for the month of November, nearly triple the amount of DraftKing’s $10.9 million in spend.

PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden foreshadowed the operator’s aggressive spend prior to ESPN BET’s nationwide launch. Snowden said the operator would aggressively spend on promotions to ensure it could quickly capture market share in states.
