Joshua Buatsi -10000
Daniel Blenda Dos Santos +1600

Odds as of May 12th

This battle of unbeaten light heavyweights has significant hardware on the line. But the winner could also serve to jettison themselves towards world title contention with a strong victory here.

A compelling prizefight amid a fun weekend of action for aficionados of the sweet science.

Joshua Buatsi’s Quest for 14-0

Joshua Buatsi was an Olympic bronze medalist in 2016 and continues to make measurable improvements between each pro bout.

Buatsi’s last fight was a surprisingly competitive one that saw him stop Marko Calic in the seventh round of their October collision.

In recent times he has joined forces with trainer Virgil Hunter who was instrumental in shaping the career of a legendary peer from the same weight division, Andre Ward.

This will be Buatsi’s first contest under the tutelage of Hunter, and the champ seems excited to showcase the new wrinkles to his game.

Joshua Buatsi has held this WBA crown since July 2018 and is looking to return to his usual form after an unexpected level of pugilistic parity in his last prizefight.

Daniel Blenda Dos Santos’ Biggest Test

Daniel Blenda Dos Santos is riding a fifteen-fight win streak heading into this bout. The French fighter has been more active in recent months having, fought five times since the last time Buatsi competed.

Dos Santos’ last bout took place only a few weeks ago, on April 24th. He bested Ivan Nikolov via knockout, and it transpired in the opening frame of their bout.

Despite both being unbeaten as professionals, these 175 pounders have resumes that look quite different when examined next to each other.

For Dos Santos,  only three of his fifteen professional opponents had winning records when he fought them. Conversely, Buatsi has been fighting some of the best pugilists out of Europe for the last few years.

This contest is scheduled for ten rounds and I do not see this one being decided via the judges’ scorecards.

Dos Santos has only been in one eight-rounder during his career, and I think that will be a drawback for him in this one. That coupled with the 85 percent stoppage rate of Buatsi.

Considering the lopsided nature of the general odds for this bout, I think there’s value in going with some prop bets. Props on this contest not going the distance and Buatsi winning via KO or TKO are both solid options.

Pick: Joshua Buatsi (-10000)
