There are horses for courses and Patrick Cantlay absolutely personifies that at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, where he finds himself tied atop the leaderboard yet again at this tournament. As we noted before the week began, it was a mild surprise his odds were so high, given he’s won and finished second at this venue twice in the last three years.

Cantlay finds himself tied at the top of the leaderboard with Martin Laird, who won this tournament in 2009, but hasn’t won on the circuit in seven years. There are four players tied for third just two strokes back of the leaders, including Matthew Wolff, who went toe-to-toe with Bryson DeChambeau at last month’s US Open.

Cantlay Dominates This Golf Course

There’s a reason Patrick Cantlay is such a heavy favorite heading into Sunday at this tournament. Remarkably, in the last three years here, he’s won in 2017 and finished runner-up the last two years.

As much as there’s little to no value in wagering on him heading into the final round, he’s been so great at this track it’s hard to ignore. This week, he’s made the most birdies with 22 and is second in strokes gained around the greens.

Though he’s surprisingly only won two PGA Tour events in his career, he’s just so comfortable on this track it is hard to imagine a scenario that Cantlay won’t be at least right in the thick of contention come late Sunday. The only argument to be made to not place a bet on him is the fact he sits at just +165 odds to win.

With crazy low scores the norm at this defenseless golf course, there’s a chance someone shoots a super low final round to overtake him, but he’s clearly head and shoulders above his competition.

Best Live Value Picks at Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

  1. Matthew Wolff (+550): Shot the round of the day Saturday, a blistering 10-under, 61, which included three eagles in a five-hole stretch. Finished runner-up at his most recent start at the US Open. Second tee-to-green this week and T-2nd in greens in regulation, hitting all but six of the first 54 greens.
  2. Kevin Na (+2000): It’s pretty surprising that the defending champion of this tournament has these odds, given that he’s just three shots back of the lead. No stranger to going super low on this course, having shot rounds of 61 and 62 here last year en route to victory.
  3. James Hahn (+6500): He was on our radar before the week as a great sleeper to earn the title, so why change now? Two starts ago he was the 54-hole leader at the Safeway Open, before finishing T-9th. Then in his next tournament, he was T-6th. Fifth in strokes gained tee-to-green this week, which will set him up with lots of birdie opportunities.
