With most of the top golfers in the game teeing it up at the Scottish Open, the PGA Tour heads to Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic. This is the final tune-up before the Open Championship next week, and the field isn’t super deep. Just five players in the top-50 of the world rankings are teeing it up, led by Daniel Berger.

This tournament wasn’t contested last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning 2019 winner Dylan Frittelli is the defending champion. The South African broke a recent trend that had seen twelve straight Americans take the title. This event is often extremely close, with 14 of the last 16 iterations ending in two shot wins or fewer.

With none of the titans of golf competing, this championship offers opportunities for unheralded players to grab the trophy, with the last three champions (Frittelli, Michael Kim, Bryson DeChambeau), making this their maiden victory on the circuit.

Zach Johnson Excels at TPC Deere Run

2012 John Deere Classic champion Zach Johnson has an affinity for this track, having contended several times in the past. Not only has he tasted success, but he’s also had three runner-up finishes (2009, 2013, 2014), a T-3 in 2015 and T-5 in 2017.

Subsequently, over his last 24 rounds at TPC Deere Run, the two-time major champion has been dynamite.

ZJ is still third in putting on the campaign, which will give him plenty of chances to make birdies which are imperative on this easy course. He’s made four of his last six cuts with three top-35 finishes, so he’s playing relatively well.

He hasn’t won since the 2015 Open Championship, but if there was a course to get back in the winner’s circle, you’d be hard pressed to find a player as comfortable as Zach Johnson is at TPC Deere Run. His +3500 odds are palpable compared to some of the favorites on the board.

2021 John Deere Classic Best Value Picks

  1. Hank Lebioda (+7000): The last two Sunday’s at the Travelers Championship and Rocket Mortgage Classic have featured Hank Lebioda right in the thick of things. The lefty finished T-5 in Hartford then T-4 in Detroit, just one shot out of a playoff. In the last 24 rounds, Lebioda is first in total strokes gained and fourth in putting.
  2. Jhonattan Vegas (+7000): Just two starts ago, Jhonattan Vegas finished T-2nd at the Palmetto Championship, which was also against a less than stellar field. That was his second runner-up this year, as he also came close to his fourth victory at the Puerto Rico Open. First in strokes gained off-the-tee and second in ball striking the last 24 rounds. T-3rd here in 2014.
  3. Brandon Hagy (+15000): Hot and cold golfer with upside. Last week, the eleventh longest driver on tour was just two shots away from being in the playoff at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. That T-6 result was his second top-10 this season, having finished runner-up at the Honda Classic. He could pop for a second straight week, and if so, these odds are very enticing.
