Moving day is in the books at the WGC FedEx-St. Jude Invitational, and just like after Rounds 1 and 2, Harris English is on top of the leaderboard. The 32-year-old fired a second consecutive 5-under par round of 65, and holds a two shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith.

English and DeChambeau were tied at -16 midway through the back 9 on Saturday, but birdies on 16 and 17 helped English restore the two stroke cushion.

Top Of the Board

Both English and DeChambeau have a chance to become the first player on Tour to reach three victories this season. English won the Tournament of Champions in January, and the Travelers in late June. DeChambeau meanwhile, won the first of two U.S. Open’s on this season’s schedule in September, and was also victorious at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.

Bryson is fresh off a positive COVID test that forced him to miss the Olympics, and prior to that he flashed exactly zero form in his previous seven tournaments. He obviously found something in the lab during his hiatus, as he leads the field in strokes gained ball striking and tee-to-green this week, while ranking behind only English in strokes gained total.

Not to be outdone, English is at or near the top of every major statistical category this week. In addition to leading in strokes gained total, he’s also first in putting, while ranking third in approach, tee-to-green and ball striking.

If forced to chose between the two, I’d actually lean towards the mad scientist. DeChambeau was first in strokes gained off-the-tee and second on approach in Round 3, and would likely be in the lead by himself if not for a miserable around the green game this week. He ranks 52nd out of 66 players in that category and I’d bet on him figuring that aspect of his game out ahead of the Final Round.

DeChambeau leads the field in birdies through three rounds, and after posting eight of them on Saturday, he must be feeling like this is his tournament to win.

WGC FedEx-St. Jude Invitational Live Value Picks

  1. Abraham Ancer (+1400): We’d be staring at a much less favorable price if Ancer hadn’t finished bogey-bogey on Saturday. Despite the rough ending, he ranks fourth in strokes gained total and tee-to-green this week, and has four top-8 finishes in his past seven starts. His 17 birdies rank fourth through three rounds, and he’s only one round removed from an 8-under par round of 62. Another effort like that would likely earn him the trophy
  2. Scottie Scheffler (+2200): Scheffler was my biggest pre-tournament position and he hasn’t disappointed with rounds of 65, 65 and 67. A poor putting performance on Saturday left him five shots back, but he has more than enough firepower to post a low number and put some pressure on the top of the board. He ranks sixth over the past 50 rounds in birdie or better percentage in this field, ahead of every single player in front of him going into Sunday.
