After a one week break due to the Olympics, the PGA Tour heads to TPC Southwind for the WGC FedEx-St. Jude Invitational. If it’s a WGC you know there’s big money on the line, and starting Thursday (August 5th) 66 players will compete for their share of the $10.5 million dollar purse.

Only the cream of the crop is teeing it up in Memphis, Tennessee this week, which shouldn’t bother Scottie Scheffler. The 25-year-old has excelled in tough fields in 2021, and is the first target on our sleepers and longshots betting card.

Scheffler Flying Under the Radar

Scheffler is fresh off an 8th place finish at the British Open, and posted three top-8 results in his previous five starts. He’s still looking for his first career victory on Tour, but his results in big events have been fantastic.

He hasn’t finished outside the top-19 in a Major, WGC, or FedEx Cup Playoffs event in the past 12 months. His resume in those types of tournaments include four top-5 finishes, and seven top-8 results. Needless to say, he’s trending towards a victory.

Scheffler’s ball striking has been on point all season, and he’s gained strokes tee-to-green in 13 straight starts. More importantly though, he can flat out score. He has a better birdie or better percentage than some of the biggest names in golf over the past 50 rounds, including Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas to name a few.

Pick: Scottie Scheffler to Win (+3100)

Conners Continues Fine Play

I was all over Corey Conners at the Olympics last week, and if not for a mediocre Round 2, he could have cashed us a handsome ticket. The Canadian finished the Toyko tournament strong with rounds of 66 and 65, posting 13 birdies over his final 36 holes.

When it comes to ball striking, only Collin Morikawa rates out better, and like Scheffler, he rises to the occasion in big events.

Conners has finishes of T-8 or better at the API, Players, and Masters this year, and additional top-17 results at both the PGA Championship and British Open. TPC Southwind puts an emphasis on long Par-4 scoring (450-500 yards) and Conners checks in with the fourth best scoring average on holes of that distance over the past 50 rounds.

Pick: Corey Conners Top-10 (+350)

Top-20 Value Picks

  1. Sergio Garcia (+200): Speaking of ball striking, how good was Sergio Garcia last time out at the 3M Open? The Spaniard gained 7.2 strokes on approach and 2.3 strokes off the tee, but finished 25th thanks to some miserable putting (-7.3 strokes). Garcia has been striking it as pure as anyone in the world over the last two decades, and his last four outings have been no exception. He’s gained at least 4.5 strokes ball striking in each start over that stretch, and has three top-20 results, two of which came at Majors.
  2. Cam Davis (+300): Flying under the radar this week is Cam Davis, who is just two starts removed from a victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The Aussie is 90-1 in the outright market, and represents good value in the top-20 odds. He’s a gifted off the tee player and putter, and is a big time birdie maker. Davis ranks 16th on Tour in birdie or better percentage, and poured in 23 birdies en route to victory in Detroit.
  3. Carlos Ortiz (+300): The Mexican doesn’t get a lot of opportunities to play in WGC events, but when he does he’s made the most of his chances. He’s finished 15th and 16th in his lone two appearances and was on the first page of the leaderboard at the Olympics for the first three rounds, before a disastrous Sunday cratered his chances. Still, he’s an elite scorer and is having by far the best season of his career. He won in Houston to start the season, and has followed that up with five additional top-16 results.
