With the biggest names in golf playing overseas at the Scottish Open in preparation for the Open Championship, the Barbasol Championship offers a chance at a PGA Tour title stateside. With the top golfers vying for their own victory, this tournament gives the lesser competitors an opportunity to earn a two-year exemption plus a spot in next year’s PGA Championship. For the second consecutive year, it’s co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour.

The last two champions of the Barbasol have made this their maiden breakthrough on the main circuit, with Seamus Power accomplishing the feat in 2021, and Trey Mullinax getting it done last year. Going low is imperative for success at the Keene Trace Golf Club, with all four previous winners at this track shooting at least 21-under-par en route to the trophy.

He’s put together back-to-back top-six results.

Peter Kuest Playing Solid Golf

He may not be a household name, but Peter Kuest has parlayed two strong tournaments in a row into a special temporary membership on the PGA Tour. He chased a T-4th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with a top-20 at the John Deere Classic, where he gained nearly 20 combined shots on the field.

Peter Kuest’s Last Four Tournaments

Tournament Result
John Deere Classic T-17th
Rocket Mortgage Classic T-4th
RBC Canadian Open T-57th
AT&T Byron Nelson T-14th

At +2500 odds to win outright, you’re getting Kuest at odds longer than the top-three golfers on the board. Finding value for anybody is impossible at the Barbasol, giving that it’s a watered down field due to the Scottish Open. Kuest has been playing solidly so he has a great opportunity to make it three straight first-time winners at this event.

Past Five Barbasol Championship Winners

Year Winner
2022 Trey Mullinax
2021 Seamus Power
2019 Jim Herman
2018 Troy Merritt
2017 Grayson Murray

There was no 2020 Barbasol Championship due to COVID-19.

2023 Barbasol Championship Picks and Value Bets

  1. Kevin Streelman (+2800): PGA Tour veteran Kevin Streelman nearly made this his third title last year, narrowly losing by a single stroke. In his last twelve rounds, he’s second in strokes gained: approach, of those competing at the Barbasol. He’s made the weekend in seven of his last ten starts, highlighted by a top-10 at Colonial.
  2. Grayson Murray (+3500): Grayson Murray is a past champion in 2017 (different course), and he’s been playing some sound golf of late. After winning on the Korn Ferry Tour, he was T-3rd two starts later, then in his last PGA Tour event last week, Murray was T-6th at the John Deere Classic. That tourney saw him gain 8.5 shots compared to his contemporaries tee-to-green.
  3. Andy Sullivan (+9000): Four-time DP World Tour winner Andy Sullivan comes in with some solid form of late. His last two starts have resulted in a top-15 and a top-20. He’ll be an interesting name in the top 10/20 markets.
