It’s a crosstown matchup on Friday night with the Los Angeles Angels (55-54, 25-28 away) visiting the Los Angeles Dodgers (65-44, 34-19 home) for a three-game series that will run through the weekend. The Angels will send Patrick Sandoval to the mound, while the Dodgers counter with veteran southpaw David Price in the opener.

Joe Madden’s squad is fresh off three straight wins against the Texas Rangers and has gone 5-5 in its last 10 games. The defending World Series champions meanwhile have won three of their last four, splitting a quick two-game set with the Houston Astros on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Probable Pitchers

Sandoval has been the most consistent starter in the Angels’ rotation alongside two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani. While he’s only made 12 starts, the 24-year-old has gone 3-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 77.1 innings, striking out 87 batters in the process.

However, control has been an issue for Sandoval at times, giving up 32 free passes.

The lefty has shown well across his last two outings. He threw an absolute gem on July 24th against the Minnesota Twins, striking out 13 across 8.2 innings of one-run baseball. His most recent start versus Oakland was also terrific, surrendering just one earned again. Walks were a problem though as he issued six.

Sandoval must try to get ahead of these Dodgers hitters because, with the number of impact bats they have throughout their lineup, LA can do serious damage when given the opportunity. He also has a dismal 5.25 ERA against the Dodgers.

Sandoval vs Price

Price has had a variety of roles in 2021 for the Dodgers, featuring out of the pen and also making starts. He collected the save last weekend in a 13-0 thrashing of the Arizona Diamondbacks but did take the loss against the San Francisco Giants just days before, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.

However, his numbers have been solid. Price has a 3.55 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP while showing great command, walking just 13 hitters this season.

Surprisingly, this Angels lineup has just 18 at-bats combined against Price. Throughout his long career, the 34-year-old has a 3.28 ERA vs. LA. It’s important to note the southpaw pitches substantially better at home.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Dodgers Hitters Batting Average vs Sandoval Angels Hitters Batting Average vs Price
Austin Barnes .500 David Fletcher .000
Cody Bellinger .333 Phil Gosselin .250
Mookie Betts .333 Jose Iglesias .500
Max Muncy .000 Max Stassi .000
AJ Pollock .250 Kurt Suzuki .1000
Corey Seager .000 Justin Upton .167
Chris Taylor .400 N/A N/A
Justin Turner .400 N/A N/A

The bats have been a clear strength for the Angels, sitting fifth in the bigs with a team average of .254. In fact, they’re in the top ten of almost every offensive category. That’s much in part to Ohtani, who is enjoying a historic season.

The Japan native is hitting .272 with a league-leading 37 home runs and is a huge reason LA is just six games back in the Wild Card race. While they were playing Texas, the Angels’ offense was on fire in their last series, scoring 18 runs in the last three contests.

The Dodgers have arguably the most potent lineup in the major leagues. They hit for average and power while getting on base at an extremely productive rate. LA also added Trea Turner to the fold at the trade deadline, who is already hitting .322 this season. He’s yet to make his Dodgers debut due to COVID-19-related issues, but the shortstop may be available on Friday.

Since the All-Star break, Dave Roberts’ team is really hitting its stride at the dish, with the likes of Chris Taylor, Max Muncy, Mookie Betts, and AJ Pollock all batting either over or just under .300. With the Giants still ahead of them in the NL West, it couldn’t come at a better time.

Angels vs Dodgers Prediction

The Dodgers play much better at home and there are numerous guys who are tearing the cover off the baseball right now. Along with Price thriving on his home mound, they’re a safe bet to cover the spread in the series opener.

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (-105)
