Plenty of Value In Pitcher Strikeouts

The strikeout totals set for both starting pitchers in Game 4 – right-handers Nick Pivetta of the Red Sox and Zack Greinke of the Astros – look to be set too low. Greinke is at 2.5 strikeouts, while Pivetta’s total is established at 3.5 strikeouts. Both pitchers have successfully exceeded those totals in the vast majority of their starts during the 2021 season.

Veteran Greinke has collected three or more strikeouts in each of his past four starts but just four of the last seven. However, during 31 starts during the 2021 season, Greinke fanned at least three batters in 26 of them. On the other hand, in Greinke’s June 10 start at Fenway Park, he lasted just four innings and struck out two.

Pivetta has struck out 11 over two postseason starts, with at least four batters mowed down in each game. He’s topped four strikeouts in four straight starts and seven of the last eight. Over the season, he’s exceeded the 3.5 strikeout total in 24 of 32 starting appearances.

At Fenway Park, Pivetta has fanned four or more hitters in 13 of 16 starts this season. He struck out nine Astros when he faced Houston on June 2.

The Over looks to be the play for both pitchers.

Pick: Zack Greinke over 2.5 strikeouts (+140); Nick Pivetta over 3.5 strikeouts (-145)

Red Sox a Hitting Machine

Boston batters are absolutely crushing it during the postseason. The Red Sox have slugged 20 home runs in eight games.

Centerfielder Enrique Hernandez is pacing that assault. He’s batting .500 (9-for-18) with five home runs. Hernandez has also fared well when it comes to packing a power punch against Greinke over his career.

Although the Boston outfielder is batting just .231 (3-for-13) against the Houston right-hander, two of those three hits are homers. And Hernandez has driven in six runs.

Likewise, ex-Astro JD Martinez has also worn out Greinke over the years. The Boston designated hitter is batting .278 (5-for-18) when facing the Houston righty. That includes two homers and four RBI.

In smaller sample sizes, shortstop Xander Bogaerts (1-2) and third baseman Rafael Devers (1-for-2) are batting .500 and catcher Christian Vazquez (2-for-2, 2 RBI) is hitting 1.000.

Pick: Enrique Hernandez +0.5 home runs (+450); JD Martinez +0.5 hits (-225)
