So far in 2023, the Blue Jays (37-37, 18-18 away) vs Orioles (42-24, 21-12 away) rivalry has been completely one-sided. Baltimore swept the Blue Jays in Toronto last month, and whopped them in the series opener of this week’s three-game set 11-6.

Online sportsbooks are expecting more Oriole dominance on Thursday afternoon, as they pegged Baltimore as home chalk in the MLB odds.

Toronto vs Baltimore Probable Pitchers

The O’s entered play on Wednesday night with baseball’s second best record. They’d won seven of their past 10 games, posting the second best home record in MLB, with the most away victories in the league.

You’d think that would earn them plenty of respect in the World Series odds, but it hasn’t. Baltimore currently checks in at 30-1, with 12 teams boasting a shorter number. One of those clubs is Toronto at +1900, despite a worse record, and a fourth place ranking in the AL East.

The Orioles will give the ball to Tyler Wells on Thursday, who’s looked more like the staff ace than the team’s number four starter. Wells leads all Orioles starters in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts and WAR. He’s won five of his last six decisions, yielding two or fewer runs in three straight.

Wells was 1-0 in two starts last year against the Blue Jays, holding the Toronto regulars in the MLB starting lineups to a pedestrian .200/.289/.325 slash line. The 28-year-old has eclipsed his strikeout prop in five of his last six starts, recording seven or more K’s five times.

Kikuchi vs Wells Stats

Yusei Kikuchi
VS
Tyler Wells
6-2 Record 5-2
4.34 ERA 3.24
1.34 WHIP 0.85
.263 OBA .181
3.0 SO/W Ratio 4.9

Toronto will counter with Yusei Kikuchi. The southpaw owns an impressive 6-2 record, but wins certainly don’t paint an accurate portrait of his season.

Kikuchi is on pace for one of his worst statistical seasons ever. He’s yielding a .263/.320/.514 slash line, and has surrendered 18 home runs in only 66 innings. For those keeping track at home, that’s one dinger every four innings, and the long ball and his control have been an issue lately.

Over his past six starts, Kikuchi has yielded 10 home runs, and issued 13 free passes. He’s faced the O’s once this season, lasting just 4.2 innings in a 6-2 defeat. Baltimore hitters have had their way with the Jays lefty over his entire career, smacking five homers in only 69 at-bats, while posting a .939 OPS.

Blue Jays vs Orioles Prediction

The O’s offense has been clicking during their current five-game winning streak (entering play on Wednesday), averaging over seven runs per outing. They crossed the plate 11 times in back-to-back contests on Sunday and Tuesday, and have drastically outplayed Toronto in the first four games of their season long series.

Baltimore has outscored the Blue Jays 31-16, belting nine home runs, and slashing .302/.358/.547. No players have prayed on Toronto more than Adam Frazier and Aaron Hicks, who are a combined 14-for-30, with 3 homers and 7 RBI.

The Orioles have pounded most pitchers they’ve faced this season, to the tune of baseball’s sixth highest scoring lineup, producing significantly better stats both at home and versus left-handed pitching.

Blue Jays vs Orioles 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
June 13 Blue Jays Orioles BAL, 11-6
May 21 Orioles Blue Jays BAL, 8-3
May 20 Orioles Blue Jays BAL, 6-5
May 19 Orioles Blue Jays BAL, 6-2

As for Toronto, they’re still one of the most dangerous lineups in MLB, but the Orioles arms have been able to limit the damage they’ve imposed. Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Matt Chapman and Bo Bichette, three of the team’s top-four hitters, are a combined 10-for-51 (.192) against Baltimore pitching.

If there’s a Blue Jay worth targeting in the player props market however, it’s George Springer. The slugger is 8-for-17 versus the O’s this season, and has a homer in one of his three career at-bats against Wells.

Pick: Baltimore Orioles Moneyline (-125)
