Losing Streaks on The Line as Cubs Visit Pirates

A pair of NL Central rivals mired in lengthy losing streaks clash this week as the Chicago Cubs visit the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game set that gets underway on Tuesday night.

The Cubs arrive in Steeltown on a six-game slide that leaves them trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by four games in the hunt for the second NL wild card with just six games remaining on their schedule. Chicago has come out on the short end of five straight one-run contests, capped by a 3-2 loss to St. Louis in their final home date of the season on Sunday.

The road woes that have dogged the Cubs all season have all persisted, with the club seeing a rare six-game win streak snapped by their current 2-5 run. Indeed, it will be dismal play on the road that will be pointed too in the likely event that that the Cubs miss the postseason. While Chicago owns a sparkling 51-30 home record, its 31-44 road record is among the worst road records in the NL this season.

The Pirates return home after getting swept in a three-game set in Milwaukee, and now ride a demoralizing nine-game losing streak. The club has been thoroughly outplayed during their extended September swoon, allowing 9.66 runs per game during a run that began with three straight losses at Wrigley Field over which the Cubs scored a club-record 47 runs.

With that sweep the Pirates have now dropped nine of 10 overall to the Cubs, including three of four at home.

Pittsburgh has also been dismal on home turf since coming out of the All-Star break, going 9-23 in the club’s past 32 at PNC Park, capped by a three-game sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners last week, in which they were outscored by a 16-6 margin.

But now faced with the opportunity to officially bury the Cubs’ postseason aspirations, can the Pirates turn things around in this week’s series?

Pick: Pirates (+235)

Brewers Ride Win Streak into Cincinnati

The Milwaukee Brewers will be aiming to tighten their grip on an NL wild card spot with a fifth straight win when they open a three-game series in Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

The loss of Christian Yelich to a season-ending knee injury has not slowed down the Brewers. Milwaukee has now won 15 of 17 contests, including 10 of 12 since the reigning NL MVP was sidelined.

The club has effectively shut down opposing hitters, limiting opponents to just total runs over their past seven outings, and just 2.88 runs per game during their 17-game surge.

In addition, the Brewers’ bats remain red-hot as they arrive in Cincinnati. The club scored 24 total runs while sweeping Pittsburgh in a three-game weekend series, continuing a steady run on the road that has seen them win eight of nine away from Miller Park, and halting a shaky 11-18 run.

Brewers vs Reds Probable Starting Pitchers

Chase Anderson September 26 Luis Castillo

The Reds continue their final home stand of the season after dropping two of three to the visiting New York Mets over the weekend. That extends a run of inconsistency that has plagued Cincinnati throughout the second half of the season, with the club going 17-24 in 41 contests since August 11. That includes an 8-9 run on home turf, with the Reds posting just one series victory during that stretch.

The Reds have enjoyed steady success against Milwaukee since getting swept in a three-game series on home turf in the first week of the season. Cincinnati has won eight of 13 meetings since, including three of four at Great American Ball Park in early July, a series which they closed out with a pair of shutout wins. However, Cincinnati has regularly surrendered big run totals in recent home outings, allowing six or more runs on five occasions while going 4-6 so far in the Month of September.

Pick: Brewers (-110)
