  • The Los Angeles Dodgers are -165 road favorites over the Philadelphia Phillies in a National League game scheduled for Tuesday, August 10
  • Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is making his second start for LA
  • Philadelphia is seeking its first nine-game winning streak in a decade

The Los Angeles Dodgers (67-45, 31-25 away) are reigning World Series champions. In Philadelphia, the Phillies (59-53, 34-21 home) are the hottest team in all of baseball.

That combination should make for a fascinating set of circumstances as these two powerhouse clubs begin a three-game set on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. Even though it’s the Phillies who’ve won eight consecutive games, it’s the Dodgers who oddsmakers are establishing as the -165 road favorite to win this game.

LA has won two of three from Philly this season. However, the Phils are winners of eight of the last 12 games between the two teams played in Philadelphia.

Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola has always proven to be a more effective hurler at home. He’s 37-19 with a 3.01 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in starts at Citizens Bank Park over his MLB career.

That’s held forth thus far in 2021. Nola is 4-2 at home this season with a 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. On the road, he’s 3-4 with a 5.56 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.

He’s a perfect 2-0 in four starts against the Dodgers with a 3.75 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Nola is 4-2 since June 1. He didn’t figure in the decision in his last start at Washington facing the Nationals. Nola surrendered five earned runs in five innings.

Scherzer was all business in his first Dodgers start after arriving from Washington at the MLB trade deadline. He worked seven innings, allowing two earned runs and got the win against the Houston Astros.

Scherzer has gone to the max when facing the Phillies this season. This will be his fourth start of 2021 at Citizens Bank Park. So far, he’s 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA. Against the Phillies in his career, Scherzer is 14-4 with a 2.55 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. That includes an 8-1 slate with a 2.33 ERA and 0.91 WHIP at Philadelphia.

Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper, Scherzer’s old Nationals teammate, is among the hottest hitters in baseball. He’s slugged four home runs in his last six games. Harper has reached base in 17 straight games. He’s also 3-for-10 (.300) lifetime against Scherzer, with a solo homer.

Philadelphia centerfielder Odubel Herrera is 12-for-39 (.308) when facing Scherzer, including two homers and four RBI. Utility man Brad Miller is 4-for-11 (.364) with two homers and six RBI. Second baseman Jean Segura is 6-for-20 (.300) with a solo homer.

As a team, the Dodgers have endured their struggles when facing Nola. First baseman Albert Pujols is 2-for-3 (.667) with two RBI. First baseman Matt Beaty is 2-for-2 (1.000), including a solo home run.

Dodgers vs Phillies Picks

The Dodgers figure to be without third baseman Justin Turner. He’s day to day with a groin injury.

Offensively, LA should test Phillies pitching much more than the New York Mets did on the weekend. The Dodgers are second in the majors when it comes to putting runs on the board. They average 5.21 runs per game.

Philly’s team ERA is 18th in baseball at 4.41, and Nola (4.49) is even worse than that. The Phillies are also a disappointing 3-8 straight up this season after an off day.

All good things must come to end and that’s what LA will do to the Phils’ winning streak on Tuesday.

  • Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers (-165).
