The Giants will go with Anthony DeSclafani on the mound here, while the Cards counter with lefty Jordan Montgomery, their best starter so far.

San Francisco vs St. Louis Probable Pitchers

DeSclafani is having a respectable year for the Giants, posting a 3.89 ERA in 13 starts to go along with a 4-6 record. While he doesn’t exactly overpower hitters with just 53 strikeouts in 76.1 innings, the righty has only walked 16. He consistently pounds the strike zone and pitches to contact.

However, DeSclafani wasn’t the most dominant in his last outing. He allowed two earned runs on three hits in six innings, surrendering four free passes. Not an awful start, but the walks did play a factor here. He took the loss in the process. DeSclafani has quite the track record against the Cardinals, compiling a 3.75 ERA in 19 appearances.

DeSclafani vs Montgomery Stats

Anthony DeSclafani
VS
Jordan Montgomery
4-6 Record 3-7
3.89 ERA 3.88
76.1 Innings Pitched 72
53 Strikeouts 66
16 Walks 19

Montgomery’s 3-8 record doesn’t reflect how well he’s really pitched. The southpaw has the best ERA in the St. Louis rotation at 3.88. He’s struck out 66 in 72 innings and walked only 19. Since coming over from the Yankees at the trade deadline last season, Montgomery has definitely proven his worth.

The 30-year-old is enjoying an impressive run of starts right now, too. He tossed six scoreless frames on June 9th against the Cincinnati Reds, giving up a mere three hits and walking only one. Before that? just one earned against the Pirates. Montgomery isn’t too familiar with the Giants, facing them once and allowing one earned run.

Giants Staying Afloat

While it may not look like it right now, the NL West is one of the best divisions in baseball. And with the Padres slumping, the Giants remain in contention to maybe even be a Wild Card team, although it’s still very early.

On both sides of the ball, San Francisco is fundamentally sound. They rank top 10 in homers, runs, slugging, and ERA. The next week and a half will be a very good test for Gabe Kapler’s squad, who face the Dodgers, Padres, and Diamondbacks, all divisional rivals.

What’s Going on in St. Louis?

The Cardinals are having a very rough season. Usually a legitimate contender in the NL Central, Oli Marmol’s group is at the very bottom and 13 games below .500. On a more positive note, they’re just 8.5 games out of first place, therefore it’s not totally unrealistic to see them make a run.

The struggles have continued, though. St. Louis is 2-8 in their last 10 and can’t seem to turn it around. Offense isn’t really the issue, either. It’s their pitching staff who owns a 4.28 ERA.

Giants vs Cardinals Predictions

Montgomery is about the only Cards starter I have confidence in. Expect him to put his best foot forward again Wednesday and also receive enough run support. Take the St. Louis moneyline.

Pick: Cardinals moneyline (-130)
