Sunday Night Baseball brings an intriguing matchup between a pair of talented ball clubs as the San Francisco Giants (46-37, 23-18 away) visit the New York Mets (37-46, 19-19 home) at Citi Field. The first pitch is set for 7:10 PM ET.

This could be an opener for the Giants here, but there is a chance that Alex Wood does get the ball. He hasn’t pitched since Tuesday. As for the Mets, they send David Peterson to the hill.

San Francisco vs New York Probable Pitchers

As previously mentioned, San Fran is yet to announce their starter. But just based on the current rest for their rotation, Wood appears to be the most logical candidate. The southpaw has made 11 appearances in 2023 including nine starts, going 3-2 with a 4.57 ERA in 43.1 innings, striking out 43 in the process.

Wood actually threw a gem last time out, limiting a strong Blue Jays lineup to five hits and no runs in five innings of work. In 11 career outings against the Mets, Wood owns a 3.63 ERA. Not bad.

Wood vs Peterson Stats

Alex Wood
VS
David Peterson
3-2 Record 2-6
4.57 ERA 7.00
43.1 Innings Pitched 45
43 Strikeouts 50
20 Walks 17

This year has proven to be a nightmare for Peterson. He’s gone 2-6 with a brutal 7.00 ERA in nine total starts. In other words, everyone is hitting him around. The strikeout numbers are decent as you can see above, but Peterson just struggled to keep opponents at bay.

However, the left-hander just threw a gem against the Brewers on June 27th, tossing six frames of scoreless baseball. That should give him some much-needed confidence for Sunday. In two lifetime appearances versus San Francisco though, he’s compiled a 7.36 ERA. Yikes.

Giants Staying Competitive

The National League West is wide open right now and the Giants are right in the mix. They sit just 2.5 games out of first place. San Francisco won the first game of this series Friday by a score of 5-4 but the offense struggled Saturday, losing 4-1.

The Giants mustered up a mere five hits as Justin Verlander threw a gem. Anthony DeSclafani meanwhile tossed three innings of three-run baseball but didn’t get much support. Hopefully, the bats can bounce back Sunday against a guy who isn’t consistent by any means.

Mets End Losing Skid

It’s no secret that 2023 has been disappointing for New York, who are fourth in the NL East and nine games below .500. And while they’re 1-9 in their last 10 outings, the Mets did end a three-game losing skid Saturday.

Verlander’s dominance was key and although the team only banged out four hits, Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, and Francisco Alvarez all went yard. The home run ball is a huge source of offense for NY, going deep 100 times. That ranks top 10 in the Majors.

Giants vs Mets Predictions

It’s hard for me to back Peterson and San Fran has had the upper hand in recent meetings. Take the Giants to win the finale.

Pick: Giants moneyline (Evens)
