  • The Philadelphia Phillies are -170 home favorites over the New York Mets on Sunday, August 8
  • Philadelphia is riding a seven-game winning streak
  • They’ve overtaken the Mets and lead the NL East by 1.5 games – see below who we like in this one

It’s been nearly a decade since the Philadelphia Phillies have played this well. The Phils (58-53, 33-21 home) will go for a sweep of their weekend series with the New York Mets (56-54, 23-34 away) and their eighth successive victory.

The current seven-game stretch is Philadelphia’s longest unbeaten run since 2012. And the Phillies will have staff ace Zack Wheeler on the bump Sunday as they look to keep on winning.

Oddsmakers are expecting them to maintain that roll. The Phillies are -170 home favorites to win on Sunday. However, the Mets are a solid 18-10 as an away underdog this season.

Since appearing in his first MLB All-Star game, Walker is pitching nothing like an all-star hurler. He’s 0-3 with a 12.00 ERA through his last four starts. The right-hander is among the bottom 7% in the majors in Max EV (115.9).

Walker has surrendered at least four earned runs in each of those four starts. He’s also served up seven home runs over his past three trips to the mound.

Walker has faced the Phillies three times this season. He hasn’t figured in any of the decisions. However, the Mets are 3-0 in those games. He’s also 1-0 with a career-3.75 ERA at Citizens Bank Park.

Lefty Wheeler is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in six career starts against the Mets. This season, he’s 1-1 when facing them. Wheeler has worked into the seventh inning in all three of those starts.

Wheeler rates among the top 3% in the majors in exit velocity (84.6) and the top 4% in hard hit percentage (29.1). He’s also in the top 5% in xWOBA (.251) and xERA (2.62) and in the top 10% in xSLG (.303).

Walker has proven effective against several of Philadelphia’s veteran hitters. Bryce Harper (.111), Rhys Hoskins (.143) and Didi Gregorius (.182) have all struggled at the plate when stepping against him.

Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm is 4-for-8 (5.00) with a home run and two RBI when facing Walker. Utility man Nick Maton is 2-for-3 (.667). Backup shortstop Ronald Torreyes is 3-for-5 (.600) with an RBI. Second baseman Jean Segura is 2-for-5 (.400) and catcher JT Realmuto is 1-for-3 (.333).

Mets third baseman JD Davis is 5-for-12 (.417) with a homer and four RBI off of Wheeler. First baseman Pete Alonso is 5-for-11 (.455) with an RBI. Leftfielder Dominic Smith is 8-for-17 (.471) with two RBI. Outfielder Albert Almora Jr is 2-for-5 (.400) and catcher James McCann is 3-for-9 (.333).

Mets vs Phillies Pick

While the Phillies on a roll, the Mets are rolling right off a cliff. They’ve gone 2-8 over the past 10 games. As well, they are 1-5 in their last six road games and 1-6 in their last seven games against NL East opposition.

The skid has cost them first place in the NL East, which the Mets had held since May 8. New York hasn’t been swept in a series since the Tampa Bay Rays did so in a three-game set from May 14-16.

It’s hard to bet against the hot hand. The Phils are flying and Wheeler is as steady a pitcher as there is in baseball. He’s pitched into the seventh inning in 20 of 22 starts this season.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies (-170).
