The Yankees (53-48, 31-24 home) three-game winning streak came crashing to a halt on Tuesday night, thanks to the cross-town rival Mets (47-53, 23-31 away).

Pete Alonso led the way with a pair homers in the Mets 9-3 victory, while the Yanks suffered yet another power outage at the plate. The Bronx Bombers have been one of the lowest producing lineups since the All-Star Break, but online sportsbooks are bullish on their chances of bouncing back in Wednesday’s MLB odds.

NYM vs NYY Probable Pitchers

Tuesday’s loss drops the Yanks to 4-6 post All-Star Break, and they’ll look to Carlos Rodon against the Mets to get them back on track. Rodon has been a punching bag for enemy lineups so far this season, as he tries to work his way back from forearm and back injuries.

That’s limited him to only three starts, but if he continues to perform as poorly as he has, there might not be many more outings in his future.

The 30-year-old has surrendered 10 runs and three homers in his last two starts, and has issued nine walks in 14.2 total innings this season.

Not surprisingly, the Yanks have not fared well in his outings. They’re 0-3 when he takes the mound, getting outscored 17-5 along the way.

Rodon has a fair bit of history with the Mets regulars in the MLB starting lineups, and for the most part it hasn’t gone well for him. Mets hitters are slashing .283/.356/.566 against Rodon, with Mark Canha and Francisco Lindor each taking him deep twice.

Quintana vs Rodon Stats

Jose Quintana
VS
Carlos Rodon
0-1 Record 0-3
3.60 ERA 7.36
1.20 WHIP 1.43
.316 OBA .214
0.0 SO/W Ratio 1.2

The Mets will counter with Jose Quintana, who like Rodon is trying to work his way back from injury. He’s made just one start in 2023 due to a rib issue, but unlike his counterpart, he impressed in his limited duty.

Quintana held the White Sox to two runs over 5 innings last week, and pitched very well in several rehab starts in the minors. The Mets are likely going to be selling at the deadline barring a flawless next week, and Quintana is reportedly drawing plenty of interest.

Mets vs Yankees Predictions

The left-hander is certainly catching the Yankees at the right time. After Tuesday’s anemic performance where the Yanks managed only five hits and three runs, the Bronx Bombers have now scored three runs or less in five of their last 10 games.

Extending that sample size back even further reveals even less flattering results. Since Aaron Judge went down on June 3rd, the Yankees are baseball’s second lowest scoring team. Only Kansas City has scored fewer runs, while just five clubs have a lower slugging percentage than the Bronx Bombers over that stretch.

Date Away Team Home Team Result

June 14 Yankees Mets NYM, 4-3
June 13 Yankees Mets NYY, 7-6

There’s a chance Judge could be back in the lineup this weekend, and his return can’t come fast enough. Since he went down, just two Yankee regulars are hitting north of .244. Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton are batting .182 and .178 respectively, while DJ LeMahieu is hitting .216.

To make matters worse, Josh Donaldson has been placed on the 60-day IL, freeing up more at-bats for some of Judge’s underperforming teammates.

As for the Mets, they’ve had their share of struggles since the All-Star Break as well. They’re 5-5 since the break, but as they proved on Tuesday, their lineup still has a very high ceiling. Alonso’s two homers were his first in 19 days, while his five RBI were a season-high.

The 28-year-old is riding a five-game hitting streak, with extra-base hits in three of his last four starts. He’s 1-for-2 lifetime against Rodon, and should be able to take advantage of the struggling lefty from the right side of the plate.

Given the putrid form of the Yankees lineup, and the awful start to Rodon’s season, grabbing the Mets as plus-money underdogs in this matchup is a no-brainer.

Picks:

  • New York Mets Moneyline (+130)
  • Pete Alonso over 0.5 Total Bases (-160)
  • Carlos Rodon Over 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-165)
