The Miami Marlins (48-58, 25-30 away) and Chicago Cubs (42-63, 21-32 home) continue their three-game weekend set on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. First pitch here will be thrown at 2:20 PM ET. Miami has won seven of the last nine against the Cubbies.

The Fish send Pablo Lopez to the mound here, who ended up staying put after countless rumors at the trade deadline. Chicago counters with left-hander Drew Smyly.

Marlins vs Cubs Probable Pitchers

Lopez has been the Marlins’ second-best starter this year behind Sandy Alcantara, who is a -170 favorite in NL Cy Young odds. The righty is 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 21 outings, striking out 119 in 118.2 innings while walking just 35. Lopez was getting a bunch of attention at the deadline from several contenders but Miami decided to keep him.

The 26-year-old is coming off his roughest start of the year though, getting absolutely lit up by the Mets as he allowed six runs on 12 hits, lasting only 2.2 innings. On a more positive note, Lopez owns a 1.50 ERA in two career appearances against the Cubs.

Lopez vs Smyly

Smyly missed quite a bit of time with an injury, but he’s been back in the fold for the last month. The southpaw is 3-6 in 13 starts, posting a 4.42 ERA. Smyly’s command is solid, walking only 14 hitters while collecting 48 strikeouts in 59 frames.

Just like Lopez though, Smyly was hit around last time out. He got chased after four innings by the Giants as they tagged him for five earned on seven hits, including two home runs. The veteran does have a respectable track record vs. Miami though, going 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in his career.

Marlins Struggling Over Last 10

Miami is way out of the Wild Card race and it’s obvious if you look at the MLB Playoff odds.  The Marlins are just 3-7 in their last 10 games and lost 2-1 to the Cubs on Friday.  The bats have struggled to score runs all year long, ranking 24th in the bigs.

This game had a lot of the same issues, banging out seven hits but scoring a lone run. Miami also stranded 10 runners as Chicago’s staff shut them completely down.

Willson Contreras Plays Hero

There was serious speculation that Willson Contreras would be gone at the trade deadline. The Cubs faithful even gave him a standing ovation last week because they thought it would be his last home game. But, he returned to Wrigley in style on Friday, playing hero in the bottom of the eighth.

Contreras smacked an eventual game-winning two-run homer off Dylan Floro and the crowd went absolutely ballistic. In the process, Chicago ended a four-game losing streak.
