The Baltimore Orioles (67-60, 30-36 away) have to be sad the month of August is coming to a close. Baltimore is 16-9 so far this month, and begin the week just one and a half games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.
After an off day Monday, the O’s will travel to Cleveland to begin a three-game set starting Tuesday versus the Guardians (67-59, 32-25 home). Despite Baltimore’s fine form, it’s Cleveland that drew favorite status in the series opener.

Baltimore vs Cleveland Probable Pitchers
Cleveland began the week with a two-game lead over Minnesota top the AL Central. Both the Guardians and Orioles are currently longshots in the World Series odds, but have wildly exceeded preseason expectations so far.
Cleveland will give the ball to Cal Quantrill on Tuesday, who’s in the midst of a personal six-game winning streak. Last time out he blanked the Padres over 7 innings, scattering five hits while striking out six.

That marked the third time in four starts he’s pitched at least 6 scoreless innings. Quantrill has a 2.25 ERA in five August starts, with a tidy 23-to-5 strikeout-to-walk rate.
Watkins vs Quantrill Stats
4-4 | Record | 10-5 |
3.96 | ERA | 3.59 |
1.32 | WHIP | 1.20 |
.262 | OBA | .250 |
2.0 | SO/W Ratio | 2.5 |
Baltimore will counter with Spenser Watkins. The 30-year-old has overcome a rocky first three months of the season and has pitched very well since the start of July.
Last time out, he held the White Sox to two runs and five hits over 6 innings, while striking out five. He’s yielded just three runs total over his past 11.2 innings, and has held the opposition to two runs or less in seven of his past 10 starts.

He’ll never be accused of being a big strikeout pitcher, but he doesn’t allow a lot of walks and he keeps the ball in the yard. He’s coughed up just four home runs in his past 54 innings, while issuing only nine free passes.
Orioles vs Guardians Betting Analysis
The Orioles enter play on Tuesday having won three of four, and five of their last seven overall. In an era where offense is king, the majority of Baltimore’s recent success has been thanks to their arms.
Their lineup is producing just 3.28 runs per contest during their past seven outings, but the pitching staff has yielded even less than that. The O’s starters have been excellent and their bullpen has arguably been even better. Baltimore relievers rank ninth in WAR, fifth in ERA, third in strand rate and second in ground ball percentage this season.

One O’s batter to keep an eye on though is Cedric Mullins. He’s currently riding an 11-game hitting streak, and is 2-for-4 lifetime against Quantrill with a home run.
Cleveland meanwhile, has had trouble producing runs all season outside of a pair of hitters. Jose Ramirez ranks second in MLB in RBI’s and is a longshot AL MVP odds contender, while Andres Gimenez ranks second in the American League in WAR.

They’re the only Guardian batters who’ve reached 60 RBI, and the only two regulars with an OPS north of .768. Cleveland is top-10 in the Majors in batting average, but ranks below league average in runs per game, slugging, OPS and clutch hitting.

Orioles vs Guardians Pick
Despite a history of high scoring contests over the past two seasons, there’s plenty of reasons to like the under in Tuesday’s matchup.
Both Watkins and Quantrill are pitching as well as they have all year, and both the O’s and Guardians bats are underwhelming.
Baltimore and Cleveland are each among the top-10 most profitable under teams this season, with the O’s seeing 10 of their past 12 games fall short of the total. Not to be outdone, the Guardians are 15-3-2 to the under in their past 20 contests.
