  • Read below for the Orioles vs Guardians odds and betting prediction

The second game of the Baltimore Orioles (67-61, 30-37 away) and Cleveland Guardians (68-59, 33-25 home) three-game series goes Wednesday evening. Cleveland took the series opener 5-1 on Tuesday, fuelled by another strong outing from Cal Quantrill. The right-hander allowed just one hit and one run over 6 innings, marking the fourth time in five starts he’s limited his opponent to a single run or less.

Oddsmakers are expecting a similar outcome on Wednesday, as Cleveland opened up as an even bigger home favorite than they did on Tuesday.

Baltimore vs Cleveland Probable Pitchers

Baltimore, who sit 2.5 games out of the final AL Wild Card spot, will give the ball to Jordan Lyles. Last time out he was fantastic against the White Sox, limiting them to just one earned run over 7 innings.

His previous two outings were much less impressive however, as he surrendered four runs over 4 innings to both the Red Sox and Rays. Prior to that he’d allowed two runs or less in three straight starts but the bear case on him is that he struggles on the road and has been hit hard by the Guardians in the past.

Lyles has a 5.85 ERA as a visitor this year compared to a 2.94 mark at home. In 34 career at-bats against him, current Cleveland batters boast a .294 average and a .951 OPS.

Lyles vs McKenzie Stats

Jordan Lyles
VS
Triston McKenzie
9-9 Record 9-10
4.45 ERA 3.17
1.46 WHIP 0.95
.287 OBA .198
2.7 SO/W Ratio 3.8

The Guardians, who sit atop the AL Central, will counter with Triston McKenzie. The 25-year-old is having an impressive August, posting a 2.94 ERA over five starts, yielding three runs or less in four straight outings.

Last time out he allowed three runs over 6 innings versus the Mariners, and in the start prior to that he struck out 14 batters against the White Sox.

McKenzie is 5-2 at home this season, with a tidy 2.78 ERA and .185 opponent batting average. It’s worth noting he did struggle in his lone start versus Baltimore this season, coughing up five runs and three homers over 7 innings. That effort happened earlier in the year when he was struggling to keep the ball in the yard but it appears he’s corrected that issue. McKenzie has allowed only five home runs total over his past 67 innings of work.

Orioles vs Guardians Betting Trends

McKenzie is certainly catching the O’s at an opportune time. Baltimore managed just one hit on Tuesday and advanced only three runners to second base. It marked the second consecutive game where they scored only one run, and the fifth time in six outings they’ve scored three runs or less.

They’re batting a measly .199 over the past week with a .271 OBP and a .346 slugging percentage. They’ve been carried lately by their starting pitching and bullpen, but they’re simply not built to come from behind when their starter struggles. For the season Baltimore ranks below league average in runs per game, batting average, OBP, home runs, slugging and OPS.

Cleveland on the other hand solved their own offensive struggles on Tuesday, at least temporarily. The Guardians pounded nine hits and got some much needed offense from someone other than Andres Gimenez and AL MVP odds longshot contender Jose Ramirez.

Josh Naylor smacked a two-run homer in the 4th, giving him 16 dingers on the season. It marked the first time Cleveland had scored more than four runs in six games, and just the second time in their last nine contests.

Orioles vs Guardians Pick

While both Baltimore and Cleveland are fighting for a playoff spot, underwhelming lineups make it impossible for them to be a true World Series odds contender.

The O’s offensive woes are a bigger concern at the moment than the Guardians, making Cleveland the preferred target on Wednesday. McKenzie has been fantastic both recently and at Progress Field this season, and I like that trend to continue.

If you’re looking for a play on the total, consider the fact that the under is now 11-2 in Baltimore’s last 13 contests, and 16-3-2 in the Guardians past 21 outings.

Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline (-165)
