It’s an AL East showdown on Tuesday evening in the Bronx, with the Baltimore Orioles (38-67, 21-36 away) facing the New York Yankees (57-48, 27-24 home) in the second contest of a three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET.

The series opener saw Baltimore spoil the debut of newly-acquired Andrew Heaney, who gave up four solo homers in just four innings of work. NY meanwhile was held to just one run by the Orioles staff, with Jorge Lopez tossing an absolute gem.

Alexander Wells takes the mound on Tuesday for the visitors, while Gerrit Cole gets the call for the Bronx Bombers.

Probable Pitchers

Wells is making just his third big league start on Tuesday and fifth major league appearance overall after getting called up to the show on June 25th. The Aussie was touched up in his last outing on July 29th, going five innings against the Detroit Tigers while surrendering four earned runs in the first loss of his MLB career.

So far, Wells has a 5.28 ERA in 15.1 innings, striking out 12 hitters and walking nine. Needless to say, his experience at this level is limited and he’ll be faced with arguably his toughest task yet in a Yankees lineup that’s absolutely stacked, especially after their trade deadline acquisitions. However, no one on New York’s roster has ever faced the left-hander.

Wells vs Cole

Alexander Wells

Gerrit Cole
1-1 Record 10-6
5.29 ERA 3.11
15.1 Innings Pitched 130.1

By no surprise, Cole has been the workhorse of Aaron Boone’s rotation in 2021, throwing a team-high 130.1 innings, which is the ninth-most in the majors. While his win-loss record isn’t fantastic, the hard-throwing righty has been relatively consistent. However, Cole is coming off a dreadful start where the Tampa Bay Rays lit him up for seven runs across 5.1 innings pitched which resulted in his sixth loss of the season.

Nevertheless, the 30-year-old has already shoved against the Orioles earlier in the campaign, giving up four hits and no runs in seven innings of work. In fact, Cole has a fantastic career 1.36 ERA versus Baltimore, striking out a ridiculous 57 batters in 36.1 innings. No one in their current lineup has had much success against him, either.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Orioles Hitters Batting Average vs Cole
Maikel Franco .333
Austin Hays .000
Trey Mancini .111
Richie Martin .000
Ryan Mountcastle .250
Cedric Mullins .222
Anthony Santander .222
Pedro Severino .100
DJ Stewart .111
Pat Valaika .000
Austin Wynns .500

Note: As mentioned above, no batters on the Yankees have ever faced Wells.

Before Monday’s loss to Baltimore, New York swept the Miami Marlins. However, it’s not like their bats were electric, scoring just 10 runs in three games. Despite the high-profile names scattered throughout the lineup, the Yankees have struggled offensively this season. They’re in the bottom 10 of the bigs in runs scored, hits, average, and strikeouts.

The addition of two impact left-handed hitters in Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo should definitely help, with Rizzo getting off to a blazing start, clubbing two homers already. However, Gallo has yet to find his stroke.

The Orioles have been dreadful in about every single aspect, but Game 1 of this series was a huge positive. Going deep four times at Yankee Stadium is always a great way to silence the New York faithful, with Ryan Mountcastle leading the way with a 3 for 4 night. Anthony Santander and Cedric Mullins also enjoyed two-hit games, with Baltimore collecting a total of 11 hits off the Yankees pitching staff.

Orioles vs Yankees Prediction

After a rather forgettable performance on Monday where the Yankees registered only three hits, I do expect them to bounce back and score some runs off the inexperienced rookie Alexander Wells. Cole is always dominant at home as well and shouldn’t have any problems keeping the Orioles bats quiet in Game 2 of the series.

Take New York to cover the runline here and collect a crucial victory in the Bronx as they continue to chase a Wild Card spot.

Pick: New York Yankees -1.5 (-160)
